The good, the bad and the ugly of Apple's latest tech

Sharing their thoughts with Polygon, game developers believe the release of iOS 7 and the two new phones will benefit them, while outlining their expectations for the upcoming iPad, which is speculated to be unveiled this week. The iOS GM Seed was released to developers on Sept. 10 to the public Sept. 18 for the iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and the fifth-generation iPod touch. Originally revealed during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2013 keynote, iOS 7 includes the revamped Game Center, a kids category for games in the App Store and support for third-party game controllers. These consumer-oriented features are welcomed additions alongside the myriad of developer-specific additions rolled out that game creators can take advantage of. "There's several cool...

EA digital revenue up, packaged revenue down

Electronic Arts reported financial results today for the fiscal quarter ending June 30, 2013, showing an increase in digital net revenue and a decrease in packaged goods compared to the same quarter last year. GAAP digital net revenue was $482 million, compared to $342 million in Q1 2013, while revenue for publishing packaged goods and other net revenue was $452 million, down from $592 million in Q1 2013. Total net revenue was $949 million, compared to $955 million in Q1 2013. EA singled out several games that performed well during the quarter, including The Simpsons: Tapped Out, which recorded its highest revenue in a quarter since its launch last year. Digital net revenue for FIFA 13 was more than $70 million (non-GAAP) in Q1 2014, which represents a 92 percent increase versus F...

Real Racing 3 adds Chevrolet update

Real Racing 3's Chevrolet update is now available for the iOS and Android versions of the game, developer Firemonkeys announced. The new update adds two Chevrolet vehicles to the game's lineup: the Cobalt SS and the Camaro ZL1, and adds a new event type — Hunter — where players chase down the hunted car and try to overtake it within one lap. The update also adds more than 100 new events, has cloud save functionality so players can transfer their save data between devices, and also includes social features like leaderboards and the ability to see which friends are online. Bug fixes, performance optimizations and an improved tutorial and main menu round off the update, which is currently available for download on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon App Store.

Majority of mobile gamers prefer the free-to-play model, says EA

The majority of mobile gamers prefer the free-to-play model and those who dislike it are a "vocal minority," Electronic Arts head of mobile and social Nick Earl said in an interview with GamesIndustry. "The market has spoken very loudly that that's the model they like," Earl told GamesIndustry. "Even though there's some vocal minority that don't like it, ultimately the numbers would show that they and others all support the freemium model better." Earl went on to mention Real Racing 3's launch as a free-to-play title, which featured microtransactions that were considered controversial. He believes that the who were "initially" "annoyed" at the freemium model were more attuned with the "all-you-can-eat model." "That's the kind of people they are. But at the end of the day, they're...

Firemonkeys' decision behind Real Racing 3's free-to-play model

Firemonkey's Real Racing 3 for iOS and Android boasts some of the most realistic graphics on a mobile device, has impressive race tracks based on real-world tracks and even an asynchronous multiplayer mode. But it's not the game's technical capabilities that have fans of the series up in arms — it's the controversial new free-to-play business model. In an interview with Polygon, Kynan Woodman, development director at FireMonkeys explains the "driving force" behind the decision to go free-to-play with Real Racing 3. He says with the difficult learning curve of Real Racing 3, the company needed to cast a broader net to reach the most customers as possible. "Real Racing isn't an easy game to play, so we wanted to make it as broadly accessible as possible and the way of doing that is by...

The tech behind Real Racing 3's time-shifted asynchronous multiplayer

Firemonkeys is building Real Racing 3 with asynchronous multiplayer, a component that's common in mobile games. In a racing title, that traditionally entails competing with a "ghost" run uploaded by another player — you play against an ethereal vehicle driving along the exact route that person took, and attempt to finish with a better time. Of course, that kind of multiplayer isn't possible with two corporeal cars, since they could bump into each other. So in Real Racing 3, Firemonkeys is introducing a feature it calls "time-shifted multiplayer" that lets you race against others asynchronously — but in a live race. We spoke with Firemonkeys community manager Sam Mayo this week to find out how it works. If you log in to Facebook and Apple's GameCenter, Real Racing 3 will scan those...

Real Racing 3 dev diary explains time shifted multiplayer

Real Racing 3 players will be able to play against friends anytime, anywhere, with the game's time shifted multiplayer, according to the latest developer diary. "You can play your iPhone one day, then [friends] can play against you the next day on their iPhone without you having to coordinate it or organize everything together," said Ptolemy Oberin, one of the game's programmers. According to community manager Sam Mayo, players need only sign into their account to compete with friends or rivals worldwide. "When your friends play online, their results are sent to our servers and they're made available for people to play them," Mayo said. "Then you can challenge your friends' times that might have been recorded days or weeks ago." Real Racing 3 will launch on iOS and Android. The game...

Real Racing 3 demoed on iPhone 5

Electronic Arts showed Firemonkeys' Real Racing 3 running on an iPhone 5 at today's Apple event, with a new kind of asynchronous multiplayer that's being added to Apple's GameCenter. Real Racing 3 was announced earlier this summer for iOS. EA's Rob Murray came out to show off a feature called "time-shifted multiplayer," an asynchronous feature that lets players compete in races against each other's "ghost" cars and interact with them as if they were real. In the demo, a racer bumped a ghost car being "driven" by someone who wasn't playing at the moment. Real Racing 3 is set for release later this year; we've reached out to EA for a specific date and will update this post with any information we receive. The iPhone 5 launches on September 21st. Check out the announcement trailer...
