Red Orchestra 2 on sale and free-to-play this weekend on Steam

Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, Tripwire Interactive's multiplayer WWII first-person shooter, is free-to-play this weekend and on sale in celebration of the game's recent content update, according to a post on the game's website. According to its Steam listing, players can download and play the FPS at no cost through Sunday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. ET. Players will have access to the recently-released Fall 2012 Content Pack, which includes the Barashka map from the original Red Orchestra and a streamlined interface in the game's timed, objective-based Countdown mode, which is offering double XP this weekend. Free Red Orchestra 2 update adds classic map Barashka, redesigned mode, more

The latest free update to Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad, a World War II first-person shooter from Tripwire Interactive, brings in the fan-favorite Barashka map, a redesigned Countdown mode and more. Barashka is a beloved map from the original Red Orchestra, and the developers have reworked it for the sequel, adding combined arms combat, villages, bridges and a river crossing. As you can see in the trailer above, the new elements lead to some heavily contested hotspots. Barashka is playable in Territory and Countdown modes. Tripwire also revamped the Countdown mode itself, simplifying things with an easier-to-understand interface and match flow that make for "much more instant and direct battles," according to the studio. Serious Sam 3 and Red Orchestra 2 get Steam Workshop support

Both Serious Sam 3 and Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad now have Steam Workshop support, meaning that players can now use community-made weapons, maps and mod the games. In the case of Red Orchestra 2, Tripwire Interactive announced today that while there isn't much available in the workshop yet, players can expect to play new maps created by modders or get involved in the modding themselves. Tripwire is hosting a "Counterattack" Custom Map Making Competition with $35,000 worth of prizes to be won and a custom PC for the Grand Prize winner. The Red Orchestra 2 SDK is free to anyone who already owns a copy of the game.
