Resident Evil 6 review: biohazardous waste

Resident Evil 6 is a shape-shifter. It's an oversized behemoth. It's a franchise-diminishing disappointment. More than anything, Resident Evil 6 is a compromise - a desperate, ugly bid to appeal to as many people as possible. Did you stop liking the series after Resident Evil 4? You can play as rookie cop turned secret service agent Leon in a small-town setting inspired by the devastated Raccoon City from the first three games. Do you prefer Resident Evil 5's more action-heavy focus? Check out original Resident Evil protagonist Chris' militaristic, globe-trotting storyline. Mysterious mercenary Jake's campaign even has clear nods to Resident Evil 3's unstoppable Nemesis. But all this fan service goes to waste. Resident Evil 6's myriad problems - from tedious quick time events to...

Capcom reports fiscal 2012 results, reiterates focus on streamlining business and cutting costs

Capcom reported financial results for its 2012 fiscal year today, posting a significant drop in net income due to restructuring costs as the company shifts focus for a future in which it expects development costs to rise on next-generation consoles. Capcom tallied net sales of 94.08 billion yen ($953.2 million) for the full year, a 14.6 percent jump from the 82.07 billion yen ($831.3 million) it recorded in the 2011 fiscal year. But net income dropped by 55.8 percent from 6.72 billion yen ($68.1 million) in fiscal 2011 to 2.97 billion yen ($30.1 million) this past year. The major drop in Capcom's net income resulted largely from a "special loss" of 6.95 billion yen ($70.4 million) associated...

Resident Evil 6 failed to meet Capcom sales expectations due to development 'challenges,' inadequate marketing

"Challenges" during development and "inadequate organizational collaboration" led to Resident Evil 6 performing beneath Capcom's expectations, the company stated in a Q&A accompanying its recent financial earnings report. Capcom said that while it believes having sold 5 million copies of the game is "proof that [Resident Evil 6] is a popular title," it has not reached a "clear conclusion" regarding its under-performance. The company is looking into potential causes within its internal development and sales divisions, though Capcom places part of the blame on inadequate marketing for the game. "We believe that the new challenges we tackled at the development stage were unable to sufficiently appeal to users," Capcom wrote. "In addition, we believe there was inadequate organizational...

Resident Evil producer says the series action-oriented focus may be revised

The next Resident Evil game may have less emphasis on action-oriented gameplay and more "horror and fear," according to series producer Masachika Kawata. He tells Videogamer that he's begun to reconsider the franchise's shift in tone based on response to recent Resident Evil titles. "Looking at user feedback from the last couple of games, I've started to slightly revise my opinion on that matter," Kawata told Videogamer in regard to the reception of Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. While elements of Resident Evil 6 were designed to appeal to the fan who prefers the series' horror leanings, the "big dumb action movie" vibe permeated the entire experience. "I still think it's important for us to challenge ourselves to include new elements in the games to keep...
