It was his own fault, really. On vacation with his girlfriend, they had dared each other to swim out into the Mediterranean, a mile and a half or so, to a buoy. He knew she was a strong swimmer but he wanted to impress her. They made it to the buoy. He was exhausted. He feigned only a little tiredness. He told his girlfriend to swim back to the beach, while he caught his breath. "The buoy was slippery and I could not hold on," he recalls. "I thought, I will try to get back to the beach slowly and calmly. That lasted for 30 seconds. I had a panic attack. I tried to swim and I remember that my body said, it is over, and I started to drown." It was in those moments that he discovered something surprising, something about the pain of loss, how it is not nearly what you might...

The Last of Us and Shadow of the Colossus will both feature in the Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition, with special enemies, skins and a playable level for PlayStation 3 and PS4 users. Announced at Sony's E3 news conference on Monday, Blizzard has since shed a little more light on what the inclusions mean. In a nephalem rift inspired by The Last of Us, the player may battle the stalker, clicker and bloater infected from the game in a randomized dungeon level. Shadow of the Colossus appears with the "Guise of the Colossi," a set of plans that unlock six armor appearances inspired by the PS2 game. Every class in Diablo 3 may wear the armor. The Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition launches on Aug. 19 for PS3 and PS4.

You probably remember how the series works: You, the heroic investigator, have to jet around the world chasing Carmen's henchmen, using clues that you pick up along the way to find your next stop and to identify who you're looking for. I wrote the bulk of the location clues, which meant that for each of the 66 cities in the game, I had to think of at least 50 things that would lead you straight to that spot. It was a pretty grueling job. I still can't look at a Lonely Planet or a Rough Guide book without thinking to myself, "I should look up the sports stadiums. Every city has one of those." As I was writing the clues, I often had a chance to write about those henchmen that you were chasing: The minions who weren't as colorful as Carmen Sandiego, or as dangerous, but who were somehow...

PlayStation Plus subscribers in North America will get free access to five games next month as part of their membership, including two big highlights: Team Ico's epic adventure game Shadow of the Colossus HD for PlayStation 3 and Dennaton Games' gory top-down action-shooter Hotline Miami for PS3 and PS Vita. During the month of October, Sony's Instant Game Collection will also offer Telltale Games' Poker Night 2 for PS3, side-scrolling shoot 'em up Sine Mora for PS3 and action-RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning for PS3. (In November, if you really liked Kingdoms of Amalur, you could also pick up the sequel rights.) The roll out of that quintet of PlayStation titles hasn't been announced, so keep an eye out for release dates for each.

Even if you have never played Ico, you've played games that have been inspired by (or lifted wholesale) its dreamy, minimalistic, heart-tugging ideals. Wired's Chris Kohler is celebrating the 12-year-old PlayStation 2 classic with a series of interviews with game designers, in a feature called "The Obscure Cult Game That's Secretly Inspiring Everything." The feature looks at how the game's design principles, and some of its particulars, are showing up again and again in modern games. One of those developers, whose work is evidently affected by Fumito Ueda's 3D exploration adventure, is Raul Rubio from Spanish studio Tequila Works, which showed a demo of its Ico-inspired Rime at Gamescom last month. "Ico is not about a boy and a girl escaping from a haunted castle or fighting shadows...

Best Buy is holding a PlayStation sale this week, with deals on the PlayStation Vita as well as the Greatest Hits versions of a variety of PlayStation 3 games. The PS Vita is available for $199.99. That applies to the standard Wi-Fi model, which regularly costs $249, but there's an even better deal: The launch bundle with the 3G model, which usually costs $299, is also on sale for $199.99. That bundle comes with a 3G-enabled PS Vita, an 8 GB memory card and a promo code good for 250 MB of data on the 3G network that AT&T provides for the handheld. (It also includes a code for a free PlayStation Network game, but the voucher appears to have expired in May 2012.) Best Buy is also offering a bunch of PS3 Greatest Hits titles for $14.99 each. The discounted games include Gran Turismo 5:...

The European PlayStation Plus service will have its Instant Game Collection expanded with Kingdoms of Amalur: Recknoning, Demon's Souls and more later this month, according to a post on the PlayStation Blog. On May 29, European Plus members will be able to grab three (technically four) games for free: EA and 38 Studios' action-RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Recknoning, From Software's hardcore RPG Demon's Souls and the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection. On the same day, three games will be leaving the Collection to make room: Hitman Absolution, Joe Danger 2 and Dead or Alive 5. One week later, Rayman Origins and Coconut Dodge Revitalized, two PS Vita titles, will be added to the Instant Game Collection for European subscribers, while shmup Sine Mora will be removed.

More than seven and half years after the release of Shadow of the Colossus, a dedicated group of fanatic players is still scouring the forbidden land, searching for the hidden treasures they were perhaps never meant to find, as detailed in a Eurogamer feature. The article explores the community of Shadow of the Colossus secret-seekers, a contingent of fans who long ago moved past relatively well-known Easter eggs like the hidden garden atop the Shrine of Worship. By exploiting the game's physics, including using a technique known to the community as "Agro-launching" — having the player character, Wander, jump off his horse at the right time to fling him forward — they were able to reach areas inaccessible by traditional means. In forum threads that run for hundreds of pages, the...
