Shadowrun Returns review: opportunity cost

Shadowrun Returns runs on karma The game places you in the shoes of a shadowrunner — a mercenary who takes contracts for whatever pays in a cyberpunk-meets-D&D future. In the premiere "episode," The Dead Man's Switch, you're thrust into a bizarre conspiracy by virtue of a contract with a murdered ex-partner. Shadowrun Returns fires an effective, world-building salvo with the hows and whys of the contract and the death itself. The story works backwards from there like it's rebuilding the layers of an onion as you're quickly shown just what this future is. This is all a little ironic, given how reassuringly old-school an RPG Shadowrun Returns is. You start the game by "rolling" a new character choosing a gender and race, whether a traditional human or a meta like an elf, troll or...

Shadowrun Returns gets a Director's Cut of its expansion this September

A standalone version of Shadowrun Returns expansion Dragonfall is set to launch this September, developer Harebrained Schemes confirms. The new release is being described as a Director's Cut by its creators, although the exact changes that have been made are still yet to be revealed. The studio promises more information to come next month. The good news is, if you already backed the game on Kickstarter or own its currently available expansion, then Dragonfall is yours for free. Shadowrun: Dragonfall, previously known as 'Berlin,' first launched in January for Windows PC, Mac and Linux. A bundled packaged with the original game was also made available. Shadowrun Returns was made by the original tabletop game's creator Jordan Weisman, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that...

Steam's 132-game Kickstarter page is proof Kickstarter has been great for games

Hundreds of hand-wringing opinion pieces have been penned about how a handful of big-budget games or a bottomless well of indie games or consumer fatigue foretell the end of Kickstarter as we know it. And don't forget the dozens of similar op-eds cued by a Kickstarter game's delay. Kickstarter is the closest we have to evergreen opinion fodder. And so I would like to add my own block to the Jenga tower of opinions: Kickstarter has been a boon for video games, and Steam's new list of Kickstarter-sponsored releases is all the proof you need. In the past couple days, both Steam and Kickstarter have pushed respective game-focused pages onto social media, linking to one another. The number of popular, critically acclaimed and financially successful games supported by Kickstarter on Steam...

A bundled package with the original game will also be available for $24.99. Android and iOS tablet versions will come later. Shadowrun Returns was made by the original tabletop game's creator Jordan Weisman, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over a million dollars. The futuristic exploration-and-combat game was launched in July, when plans for an expansion were announced. Set in Berlin in the year 2054, Shadowrun: Dragonfall is a story of conspiracies, technology and magic, which Harebrained Schemes said is a...

Shadowrun devs reveal an undiscovered 20-year-old cheat

In a recent issue of Retro Gamer Magazine, the developers of the 1993 SNES role-playing game Shadowrun revealed a cheat that's been a secret for more than 20 years. But with two decades of time that's passed between the development and the story, accounts differ. "There is a cheat in the game, but I can't remember exactly how to do it," one developer said. "Basically, there is a flickering streetlight in the first street area after you wake up in the morgue. If you examine the Matchbox four times around the flickering light, you're teleported to a cheat room that contains a bunch of upgrades and gives access to all of the levels." Another developer recalls a slightly different story. "There is an Easter Egg in the game, a certain dance around a lamppost in the main square that was...

Shadowrun Returns now available on iOS and Android tablets

iOS and Android tablet versions of Shadowrun Returns, the Kickstarted revival of the role-playing series, is now available from Apple iTunes and Google Play for $9.99, Harebrained Schemes announced on the project's Kickstarter page. The tablet version omits access to community created content and the editor. The developer plans to release a bundle of the best user-generated content to the devices "at some point in the future." "When Jordan created the original world of Shadowrun, he didn't predict that people would one day interact with that world on touch-screen computers more powerful than the one that took us to the moon," the Kickstarter update reads. "It is extremely gratifying that the enthusiasm for this game setting has stood the test of time and that we are now able to...

Shadowrun Returns 'Berlin' DLC delayed, growing into expansion

Shadowrun Returns developer Harebrained Schemes is delaying the game's first add-on campaign, Berlin, and building it out into a full-length expansion based on fan feedback, the studio announced last week. Harebrained's original plan, the studio said last week, was to make "a modest-sized campaign that we could ship by the end of October," a date the company gave earlier this month. "However, after listening to your forum discussions and feedback, it became clear that you would like to see something bigger (and so would we)," said Harebrained. "So, we've decided to spend more time on Berlin to create an experience closer to the size of Dead Man’s Switch," the game's existing campaign. Because Harebrained is spending more time on Berlin, the studio is now aiming to release the...

The expansion to Harebrained Schemes' isometric role-playing game is in the early stages, the update revealed. "Development of Berlin art is already underway, and our design team is also starting to prototype gameplay and mission ideas for the Berlin campaign," the update reads. "We're targeting late October for the release of Berlin." Shadowrun Returns for Windows PC and Mac was released July 25 on Steam for $19.99.
