Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers Review: Dream of the 90s

Soul Hackers' story is a cyberpunk tale about shadowy corporations and idealistic hackers, set in the Shin Megami Tensei universe where angels and demons exist below the surface of the everyday world. Your character runs with the Spookies — an elite, underground hacker clan that operates out of a high-tech van in fictional Amani City. When the town launches an online open world (called Paradigm X) with access for all citizens, the Spookies suspect that something is up. Upon investigating, you find that the city is overrun by demons that can live inside computers and humans alike. It's your job to harness the power of these demons and, yes, save the world. ...

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers headed to Europe this fall

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is scheduled to hit European shores this fall, Gematsu reports. The 3DS title, which is a remake of an earlier RPG first released on Sega Saturn in 1997, launched in North America earlier in the month, following a release in Japan last August. The game offers faster load times than previously experienced, in addition to full voice acting, a new opening cut scene, among other minor changes. The game received a 7.5 out of 10 from Polygon following its North American launch, in a review that states: "Soul Hackers' dungeon crawling is tedious, its story is bursting with clichés, and some particularly dated elements - such as a gross gay stereotype and mandated unskippable cutscenes - are grating. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers trailer summons demons on 3DS

A new trailer for the Nintendo 3DS remake of Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers shows off the classic gameplay with some of the new features, like full voice acting. Originally released on the Sega Saturn in 1997, Soul Hackers was designed as a more newcomer-friendly alternative to the often brutally-difficult Megami Tensei games. It stars a young man living in high-tech Amami City who summons demons to battle for him with the help of his gun computer. The 3DS remake improves the lag, adds new battle animations and new summonable demons, as well as full voice acting. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is out for 3DS on April 16.
