Skullgirls Encore getting its first male character April 22

Skullgirls Encore — a relaunch of 2D fighting game Skullgirls — will get its first male character, Big Band, for free on April 22, Lab Zero Games CEO Peter Bartholow announced today via the PlayStation Blog. Big Band, formerly known as Ben Birdland, was a beat cop who "got on the wrong side" of a corrupt police force. After a brutal attack, Dr. Avian and the ASG Lab 8 fixed him up and armed him with pneumatic weaponry. According to Bartholow, Big Band is a high risk, high reward character with power and versatility. He's also the only character capable of parrying incoming attacks. Although he'll still take some damage, Big Band's parry allows him to counter-attack his opponents with combos and special moves. "Many of his attacks will leave you vulnerable if you miss or misjudge your...

Skullgirls Encore's newest character Fukua is a clone with a purpose (update)

Skullgirls developer Lab Zero revealed a new character today — Fukua, a palette swap of an existing character with a new play style, according to a trailer released today. Fukua — a misspelling and newly-colored copy of existing character Filia that reuses her fighting frames — will be included in the beta version of the game. Her play style is different from Filia, as demonstrated in the trailer above, and according to Lab Zero Games is set up as a practice character for Robo-Fortune, a character that will be added to the game as DLC later this year. Last December, publisher Konami requested the takedown of Skullgirls from PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Both versions were pulled by the end of the month. Shortly after, Lab Zero announced that a "new" version of the game...

Skullgirls Encore launches on PSN Feb. 11

Lab Zero Games will relaunch its 2D fighting game Skullgirls as Skullgirls Encore on the PlayStation Network in North America on Feb. 11, according to the game's launch trailer. The developer announced late last year that Skullgirls, which originally launched in 2012, would be temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Games Store due to a change in publisher. The game was slated to return to both platforms in early 2014 under the name Skullgirls Encore and, according to Lab Zero, would be "a 'new' and distinct game from the original release." Those who already bought the original game for PlayStation 3 will be able to download Skullgirls Encore for free when it launches. Current Skullgirls owners will receive a voucher for a free copy of the game via a PSN XMB message....

Fighting is Magic dev to launch crowdfunding campaign for next project

Fighting is Magic developer Mane6 plans to launch a fundraising campaign via Kickstarter or IndieGoGo early this year to fund the development of its next fighting game project, according to a post on the developer's blog. "As you guys know, our team for the past project, and so far for this one, has consisted of volunteers donating their time to the project for no economical compensation whatsoever, fueled only by passion and hype," the blog post reads. "While this last part is still true, we've hit (a couple months back, actually), a point where we can not continue dedicating the full extent of our free time to development, due to other pressing obligations, namely the developers main payjobs and school." A successful crowdfunding campaign will allow the core development team to work...

Skullgirls being delisted Dec. 31, reborn as Skullgirls Encore in Jan.

Lab Zero Games' 2D fighting game Skullgirls will be temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace on Dec. 31, the developer confirmed on its website today. The game will return, however, starting in January 2014 with a new name, Skullgirls Encore. The transition from Skullgirls to Skullgirls Encore will impact owners of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game differently. On PlayStation Network, owners of the original game will need to download Encore, which Lab Zero calls effectively "a 'new' and distinct game from the original release," separately. That means the game's existing downloadable content will be incompatible with Encore. But they'll be able to download the "new" game for free, if they've purchased the existing version of Skullgirls. ...

Konami requests Skullgirls be 'delisted' on PSN, XBLA

Konami has requested the takedown of the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade editions of Skullgirls, according to design director Mike Zaimont during a recent developer livestream. According to Zaimont, Sony contacted the developer after the request had been submitted and approved without Lab Zero Games' knowledge. The PSN build will be pulled by Dec. 17, while the XBLA edition will be removed by Dec. 31. Skullgirls publisher Autumn Games parted with co-publisher Konami last month. The developer is currently working on a new Skullgirls game published solely by Autumn. If approved, the new game will include all the beta changes expected in upcoming patches. "If it doesn't [get approved], Skullgirls is going to disappear until everybody comes back from winter break," Zaimont said....
