Skylanders Cloud Patrol free on iOS until April 10

Skylanders Cloud Patrol, a mobile companion app to the Skylanders video games, will be available for free on iOS until April 10, Activision's Dan Amrich announced on the One of Swords blog over the weekend. To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the app's release, Activision is offering the touch-based shooting gallery-style game free of charge. The title, which typically costs $0.99, was similarly discounted last November. Activision also released the game on Amazon's Kindle Fire in September. In Cloud Patrol, players scour the skies for renegade trolls, eradicating them in a shooter-style minigame. The app includes daily contests, cloud saves across both iOS devices and Kindle Fire and compatibility for achievements and friend lists through Activision's social networking...

Skylanders Cloud Patrol update adds Skylanders Giants characters

Skylanders Cloud Patrol, one of three Skylanders mobile games, was updated today to add characters from Skylanders Giants, Activision community manager Dan Amrich announced today. Players who have figures of Giant Skylanders can import them directly into Cloud Patrol if they have the Bluetooth-enabled Portal of Power that came with Skylanders Battlegrounds on iOS. Otherwise, they can enter the code that came with the toy to unlock that character, or pay for it with in-game currency. Today's v1.7 update from developer Vicarious Visions also brings in some regular Skylanders that weren't previously available in Cloud Patrol, including Thumpback, Eye-Brawl and Hot Dog. Skylanders Giants originally launched last October, while Cloud Patrol was released in April.

Skylanders Cloud Patrol offering Amazon-exclusive Flameslinger figure and digital character

The character can only be obtained through an in-app purchase within the Kindle Fire version of Skylanders Cloud Patrol. Buying the $9.99 character will have Amazon ship the physical Flameslinger figure to you and immediately unlock the digital character within Cloud Patrol. According to Amazon director of games Mike Frazzini, this is the first time that an in-app or in-game purchase has been tied to a physical item. "Amazon is in a unique position to be able to deliver physical goods directly to...

Activision-Blizzard launches social games platform

Activision-Blizzard is launching its own social and mobile game platform after announcing two new Skylanders mobile games today. Named Activate, the mobile and social platform will put Activision in competition with the likes of Gree's OpenFeint and DeNA's Mobage. Inside Mobile Apps reports that Activate will allow users to access mobile games by logging in with their Facebook credentials or with an Activate account. This will then give them access to their friends list. Some games, like the two upcoming Skylanders games, will support cloud storage, which will allow users to access their games on any iOS device. Inside Mobile Apps adds that Activate will be getting social multiplayer features later this year. Activision-Blizzard opened its first mobile-only studio, The Blast...
