Activision extends Skylanders licensing deals for food, books, comics and more

Activision is continuing to license out rights for its phenomenally successful Skylanders franchise, extending the brand to products like cereal, magazines and coloring books, the publisher announced today during Licensing Expo 2014. Activision already works with more than 175 different licensing partners for Skylanders, the $2 billion toys-to-life series that will receive a fourth entry, Skylanders Trap Team (screenshot above), this October. One of those companies is the food giant General Mills, which already produces Skylanders-shaped fruit snacks. The company will begin an eight-week program in February 2015 that will put Skystones, the minigame from 2012's Skylanders Giants, on the backs of cereal boxes in North America. And a brand campaign for General Mills' Go-Gurt and Trix...

Potential new Skylanders revealed in contest, coming in 2014

Skylanders publisher Activision and Frito-Lay have teamed up for a contest that offers a glimpse at three potential new characters in the action figure/video game's next installment, which is scheduled to be released this year. The contest allows entrants to choose between three characters — a dragon-like insect, a bat witch and a dolphin pirate, all of which you can see below — and give them a name and a backstory. Judges at Activision and Frito-Lay will select a single entry for each character in May, and voters will then choose from those three names. The winning character will be included in the unnamed Skylanders game and the winner will receive a $100,000 scholarship. Those interested in participating can sign up at the contest's official site. Little is known about Skylanders'...

Activision beats its expectations for third-quarter 2013 earnings

Activision's performance during the third quarter of its 2013 fiscal year surpassed expectations, and the publisher is revising its guidance for the fourth quarter, according to the company's latest financial report. Activision pulled in $691 million of net revenue during the three-month period ending Sept. 30, lower than the $841 million of net revenue from the same quarter a year ago but 8.8 percent ahead of the publisher's expectation of $635 million. Net revenue came in at $409 million, 59 percent of the total — a record-high proportion for Activision's third quarter. Continued sales of two major titles from 2012, Skylanders Giants and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, helped drive Activision's performance — they were two of the top five best-selling games in both North America and...

Disney 'extremely happy' with early days of Disney Infinity

It's still in the early days of a new property, but Disney is so far extremely happy with Disney Infinity, Disney Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo told a gathering at the 2013 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference this week. Rasulo said the title launched with "huge interest" and that Disney is anticipating very big things into the holidays for the toy-based video game. "I don't want to be definitive about something that is in its early days, but if you think about a really great product that has come out recently that had some similarities to Infinity, which is Skylanders, Skylanders Giants in particular ... our sales have been on par with that even though we launched in August and they do theirs in September or October," he said. "We're on that scale, maybe better." W...

During the quarter, Activision released the Uprising downloadable content for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and continued the roll out of personalization packs. ...
