Skylanders Giants review: big country

Skylanders Giants takes place in Skylands, where the formerly-banished mini-conqueror Kaos has latched on to a new plan to rule the world — to find dormant robot conquerors the Arkeyans and make their power his. It’s the Skylanders job to stop him, along with whatever help and friends they can find along the way. Playing Skylanders Giants tends toward the simple, but it never feels dumb. Some characters are melee focused, and others rely on projectiles, but they all do it from an overhead perspective that emphasizes exploration over tricky platforming. There are block puzzles and jump-pads though, for an action/sort-of-platformer feel. Everything in Skylanders is designed around the figures themselves. Activision posts 'better-than-expected' Q1 2013 earnings, but is cautious about rest of year

Activision reported "better-than-expected" financial results for the first quarter of 2013 today, but according to CEO Bobby Kotick, the company expects to encounter a more challenging back half of the year. The publisher brought in net revenues of $1.32 billion during the quarter that ended March 31, a 13 percent improvement over the same period in 2012 and 14.1 percent ahead of the company's projections. Activision also showed a marked year-over-year jump in net income from $384 million to $456 million, a 13.75 percent increase. Skylanders Cloud Patrol update adds Skylanders Giants characters

Skylanders Cloud Patrol, one of three Skylanders mobile games, was updated today to add characters from Skylanders Giants, Activision community manager Dan Amrich announced today. Players who have figures of Giant Skylanders can import them directly into Cloud Patrol if they have the Bluetooth-enabled Portal of Power that came with Skylanders Battlegrounds on iOS. Otherwise, they can enter the code that came with the toy to unlock that character, or pay for it with in-game currency. Today's v1.7 update from developer Vicarious Visions also brings in some regular Skylanders that weren't previously available in Cloud Patrol, including Thumpback, Eye-Brawl and Hot Dog. Skylanders Giants originally launched last October, while Cloud Patrol was released in April.

Skylanders reaches over 100 million toys sold

Activision's Skylanders franchise has already reached over 100 million toys sold,, it was announced during Activision's Toy Fair 2013 press conference. The popular franchise hit over $500 million in total revenue sales on top of this, based on the video game and collectible toy collection. Skylanders Giants, the sequel to Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, made over $195 million in the U.S alone. The next installment in the Skylanders series, Skylanders Swap Force is scheduled to hit this fall, featuring a new line of figures both outside and in the game. Skylanders Giants figure Ninjini being given away Feb. 5 at Times Square Toys R Us

Ninjini, a yet-to-be-released figure in the Skylanders Giants line, will be given away by Activision and Toys R Us on Feb. 5 at the toy retailer's flagship store in Times Square, Activision announced today. According to Activision, a limited number of the figures will be available. The giveaway will begin at 4 p.m. ET, and the company expects interested parties will line up in advance for a shot at the magical ninja. Skylanders Giants Scorpion Striker Battle Pack available early at GameStop

The Skylanders Giants Scorpion Striker Battle Pack is available now at GameStop, a month earlier than other retailers, according to a recent press release. In addition to the Hot Dog and Series 2 Zap characters, the pack also includes three trading cards, stickers and an in-game catapult. Additionally, buyers who pick up Skylanders Giants goods totaling $29.99 or more will get one of four free sidekick characters. The promotion will last from Jan. 16 until Jan. 31. Skylanders franchise is a half a billion dollar industry in the US alone

The Skylanders line of toys and video games has netted over $500 million to date in sales at retail in the U.S., according to Activision. According to NPD data collected between January and November 2012, figures produced for both last fall's Skylanders: Giants and the original Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure released in Oct. 2011 have outsold some of the country's top action figure toy lines, including Beyblades, Star Wars and WWE. Skylanders: Lost Islands, Activision's free-to-play build-‘em-up game based on the Skylanders series, is now available as a free app in the iTunes App Store. In Lost Islands, players build and customize villages in the world of Mabu. GameStop Kids pop-up stores coming this holiday season

GameStop Kids pop-up stores will be installed around the country for holiday shopping guidance, GameStop announced today. The stores are designed to help parents pick video games and toys for their children, by collecting some of the most popular kid-friendly brands in one place. GameStop Kids locations will feature merchandise for properties such as Star Wars and Lego, and games like Skylanders, Angry Birds and Minecraft. Skylanders action figure compatibility explained with a chart

Although Skylanders: Giants is compatible with all of the figures from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, the same isn't true for all of the new figures working with the old game, according to a chart on the official Skylanders website. Giants, Battle Packs, New Core and Re-Posed characters are incompatible with Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, as seen in the chart below. According to One of Swords, although some of the LightCore characters work with Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, players will have to hook them up to Skylanders: Giants to gets the benefit of the latter game's new blast attack. Each Skylanders: Giants toy also includes a "Works With" label explaining its compatibility.
