Skylanders Swap Force dev diary talks mixing and matching your figures

A new dev diary for Skylanders: Swap Force discusses how the third game in the toy-based series will be shaking things up. A magical volcano that replenishes all of the magic in Skyland with its once-a-century eruption catches members of an elite Skylanders team in its blast. Rather than being incinerated, though, the Skylanders are given the ability to swap their top and bottom halves with one another. The top half determines how a character will fight, while the bottom half determines how they will move. The game also includes existing Skylanders characters, re-rendered with higher graphic fidelity. Kids find new use for Skylanders Giants figures with chess

After learning that the upcoming Skylanders title, Swap Force, will include a new Portal of Power and starter park, Family Gamer TV owner Andy Robertson and his children found a new use for the old sets: modified chess games. The portal, which normally is used to transfer physical figurines to playable characters in the Skylanders series, now acts as a way to power "safe spots" during play. The game uses old Skylanders figures and several new rules. Winged figures can move two squares in a straight line. Shoot figures can take out pieces in their line of sight. Bomb figures can eliminate any pieces around them within a two-square radius. When a character stands in a portal hot spot and lights up, it cannot be taken. Skylanders Swap Force play demo offers a look at gameplay

A 13-minute demonstration includes in-game cutscenes, gameplay and more for Vicarious Visions' upcoming Skylanders Swap Force. Check out the video above to watch Skylander swapping in action. The game features 16 new characters, each with two halves, which equals 256 different combinations. Changing halves will add new play patterns and behaviors to each character. Skylanders Swap Force trailer shows some swappable possibilities

A video released today for Skylanders Swap Force shows off the many swappable possibilities — or in Skylanders parlance "swappabilities" — in the upcoming game. Check out the trailer above to see animated versions of Vicarious Visions' 16 new Swap Force Skylanders as they're assembled, disassembled and reassembled to form just a fraction of the 256 possible combinations.
