Soul Sacrifice review: book of revelations

Weighing the risks and spoils of each sacrifice is rewarding Players start Soul Sacrifice as the next-in-line victim of Magusar, a powerful sorcerer who fuels his life force by feeding on the sacrificial deaths of the magically-inclined. Librom, a wise-cracking book bound in flesh, records the fates of the imprisoned and the obscured tales of Magusar, his enemies and his allies. As players read through Librom, they relive the quests and memories of the talking tome's former owner, uncovering — and in some cases rewriting — the history of the sorcerers charged with defending the world from monsters. The concept at the heart of Soul Sacrifice is the player's option to save or sacrifice fallen enemies, from lowly goblins and orcs — twisted mutations of rats and cats, it...

Soul Sacrifice demo save transfers to full game, unlocks bonus item

A lengthy demo for Soul Sacrifice hits the PlayStation Store today, and your save file from the demo will transfer to the final game, producer Kumi Yuasa revealed on PlayStation Blog. The demo covers the entire first chapter of the game, which apparently takes some time to get through. Yuasa explained that creator Keiji Inafune wanted the demo to be long, so players could experience "the full potential of the game." Fortunately, you'll be able to move your demo save to the game; and even earn an exclusive unlockable for doing so: An item called "Spirits' Heart," which allows its user to summon a stone golem battle companion. Soul Sacrifice launches on PlayStation Vita worldwide April 30.

Keiji Inafune says Japanese developers need to learn from overseas devs

When asked about the state of the Japanese game industry, Keiji Inafune — producer of Soul Sacrifice, Resident Evil and Dead Rising — believes Japanese developers have to learn from their overseas counterparts, according to an interview with IGN. "I hope Japanese game developers are breaking through the stagnation," Inafune told IGN. "However, the reality isn't as good as I want it to be. I see they're starting to be aware of the problem and that they have to do something. They know they have to learn more from western games and create games that'll sell more in the western market. However, they don't know what to do or how to do it." Inafune went on to say that although some developers are saying the Japanese industry is fine, he believes that it is "wishful thinking." "Words...

Keiji Inafune on how Soul Sacrifice was one of his easiest projects ever

As one of the main minds behind Mega Man and Resident Evil, Keiji Inafune knows a thing or two about launching new franchises. The former Capcom producer, who now leads up independent game incubator Comcept, has been busy for the past little while working on the PS Vita's Soul Sacrifice, out now in Japan and already receiving pretty good reviews. and, as he put it in an interview with Famitsu magazine, it's been remarkably smooth sailing. "It was developed in about two years," Inafune explained. "Not that I have any right to say this, but completing a brand-new title in two years is one serious undertaking. Something always winds up falling apart in the middle of development, requiring you to put it together again, but that didn't happen this time, in part because the original design...

"The game uses the motif of reading a diary to depict the life of a sorcerer who sacrifices himself as he fights," wrote editor Reona Ebihara. "It's a really original storytelling method! There's a large variety of magic, including a lot of support skills that come in handy with multiplayer, so it's fun to set up fights and build new tactics." "The story's deep and rewarding to read, and the battles feature a ton of variety," added reviewer Daichi Baba. "Throughout...

Soul Sacrifice creator working on new zombie game Yaiba

This week's edition of Japan's Famitsu magazine contains the first word on Yaiba, a new zombie-oriented action game conceived by Keiji Inafune, the ex-Capcom creator who went independent two years ago. Did you want more details than that? That's too bad – the preview has nothing but a couple pieces of concept art and doesn't give any further details, such as the target platform, release date, or what dev studio Comcept (Inafune's outfit) is working with. The art is due to be released online tomorrow on Comcept's homepage, and Inafune told Famitsu that real details will be divulged either during the Tokyo Game Show (starting September 20) or a little beforehand.
