Sound Shapes review: pet sounds

Structurally, Sound Shapes is a platformer of sorts. You control a ... small ... blobby ... thing, that rolls along the ground — on walls and ceilings. By default, the blob sticks to certain surfaces, but holding square or the right bumper will cause the blob to become heavy. This keeps you from sticking to surfaces, but can get the blob substantially more momentum, allowing you to jump just a bit further. Sound Shapes diverges from the platformer formula in some ways though, the most obvious being the absence of meaningful death. While you can "die" in Sound Shapes by touching anything colored red, you'll immediately reappear at the last checkpoint you touched, ready to try again. Levels aren't your adversary, so much as a race course to be finished as quickly as possible,...

Sony Santa Monica head helps lead the charge of women in games

Roughly 20 percent of staff at God of War studio Sony Santa Monica are women — a fact attributed to the tenure of studio head Shannon Studstill, according to a profile of the industry veteran by LA Times. This is atypical of most game studios, where — according to results published in Game Developer Magazine 2012 — women account for just 4 percent of programmers and engineers, 11 percent of designers and 16 percent of artists and animators based on a survey of 4,000 developers. "I feel like having a female in the room changes the dynamic in a positive way," Studstill said. "And we should acknowledge that and embrace it and be giving these women the opportunities that they deserve to have a voice at the table." Statistics regarding women in games remain largely unavailable,...

When the PlayStation 4 launches in North America on Friday, many PlayStation fans will find they already have a handful of free games waiting for them to download. Sony is bringing some of the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita's best downloadable games to PS4, in part to showcase its cross-platform "cross-buy" program and the power of its next-gen console. "Internally, we all love those games — Flow, Flower, Sound Shapes and Escape Plan," said Scott Rohde, software product development head at Sony Worldwide Studios America, noting that all four are available for Sony's three current platforms. "We're pretty proud and happy with our cross-buy program and we wanted to illustrate that on day one. [We wanted to] have a bunch of titles available so that if you had purchased them on other...

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP composer releases solo album Takes Time

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP composer Jim Guthrie released his first solo album in ten years titled Takes Time, according to an interview with The Verge. Guthrie tells The Verge that Takes Time was recorded in 2007 before he began working on video game soundtracks. Featuring some new techniques Guthrie picked up from doing soundtracks, he explained that if he settled on Takes Time's music and released the album in 2008 "it would've been not as good of a record" and that it "benefited from the time capsule" he put it in. He said that after working on video games, TV and film, he realized how much more time he could spend creating music, rather than doing the "indie rock thing," which consisted of time-intensive travel, soundchecks and only one hour of playing on stage. "Sword...
