Spelunky review: digging deep

As an Indiana Jones-like adventurer, the player navigates his way downward through a series of ancient mines with the ultimate goal of escape — preferably with a bounty of treasure. However, unlike the stages of a Super Mario Bros. game, which are the same every time they are played, the mines of Spelunky never repeat. In the context of Spelunky's story, the mines are mysteriously transformed by the power of trickster gods. Under the hood, the mines are actually the product of something even more malevolent: the complex math of procedural generation. Each stage's layout — the entrance and exit, the weapons and enemies, the treasures and booby traps — are dynamically generated. As are side-quests, like where might a damsel in distress call for help or a shopkeeper sell his...

It's like Meat Boy and Sonic had a baby

And yeah, sure, if you look at Fenix, the main character in Fenix Rage, he really does kinda look that way, small and stocky but also fierce and spiky. There are also the similarities in terms of speed and accuracy of control. I played the game at a demo last week, and here's the thing about Fenix Rage. It's hard, but in a fun way, very much in the tradition of the best PC platformers of today, like Spelunky or Super Meat Boy. You try to get from one end of the level to another without getting killed. If you do get killed, you go straight back the beginning and start again. There was a time when this sort of punishing mechanic would have been frowned upon, but in games like this, where precision is entirely the point of the puzzle, it is absolutely central. Fenix has basic run...

Watch a swearing streamer beat Spelunky in under two minutes

Twitch streamer Pibonacci set a new record in the world of Spelunky by clearing the game in one minute and 55 seconds. The previous record was set by streamer Samots with two minutes and one second. By using a compass, Pibonacci was able to locate the level exit and move quickly with the help of the teleporter and jetpack. Watch the video above to see him pull off the run. Pibonacci isn't the first Spelunky player to set an impressive record. Spelunky player Bananasaurus Rex baffled the community by completing a solo Eggplant Run — a feat that requires tremendous skill, luck and persistence. Twitch user YamaYamaDingDong, meanwhile, topped out high scores with more than 3 million points in April. For a complete breakdown of the Eggplant Run check out our in-depth explanation.

Spelunky Classic gets two-player co-op in this new mod

Spelunky Classic fans can now play in two-player co-op with Spelunky SD, a new mod from Yellowafterlife. The mod, which is available for free from the developer, includes a number of fixes and improvements to the original game on top of its co-op mode. "Of course, there are still more things that I would like to add to this," reads a statement from the designer. "It would be nice to allow the game to support more than two players. It would be nice to have a PVP mode (akin to Spelunky HD). It would be pretty great to get level editor and sharing back in, as well as some other forms of extensibility (to let the fun last even longer). Although right now a semi-distant dream, it would be great to have this work on Mac and Linux too (and maybe something else as well). And endless count of...

Spelunky, Nidhogg, Escape Goat 2 and more indies coming to PlayStation 4

Sony will welcome several new games to the PlayStation 4 this summer, including Drifter, Escape Goat 2, Nidhogg, Spelunky and Skulls of the Shogun, according to several posts on the PlayStation Blog. Games will include updated visuals and social aspects via the system's capabilities, while some titles feature new content and cross-buy perks. The full list is as follows: Apotheon: "The combat in Apotheon draws mainly from our collective background as multiplayer FPS gamers. We were never much for button-mashy or combo based fighters, which I think have a bit of a stranglehold on 2D action games (especially melee focused ones). Instead of giving players a shopping list of moves and combos to memorize, we just give a set of basic actions." Axiom Verge: "Axiom Verge is a retro-styled...

New Spelunky world record set at $3.14 million

The latest Spelunky world-record score comes from YouTube user Buddy7heElf, who posted a complete play-through with a total of $3,140,325 last week. Buddy7heElf managed to hit that high score in a Spelunky run that took 4 hours, 10 minutes and 4 seconds, besting the previous world record — $3,109,850 from Twitch streamer YamaYamaDingDong earlier this month, which was accomplished in 4 hours and 45 minutes. YamaYamaDingDong's score surpassed the $3,105,850 score from Twitch's Bananasaurus_Rex, which had taken seven and a half hours in February. Bananasaurus_Rex previously achieved fame for becoming the first person to complete a "solo Eggplant run," a feat he pulled off last November; check out game developer Douglas Wilson's in-depth breakdown for more details. Watch this Spelunky player set a new world record

A new world record has been set in the tunnel exploration game Spelunky, and the record-breaking run can be viewed in full above. Twitch user YamaYamaDingDong ended his run at four hours and 45 minutes with a final score of $3,109,850. The 18-year-old overtook the previous record held by user Bananasaurus_Rex, whose seven and a half hour run resulted in a score of $3,105,850. Earlier this year, Spelunky creator Derek Yu commented on the then-world record, telling Polygon he didn't believe a score over 3 million points was possible prior to watching the video of Bananasaurus_Rex. "He achieved the impossible!" Yu told us. "As in, we were so confident that an over 3 million score was impossible that pre-patch, the game actually thought you were cheating if you submitted a score that...

Having it all: Can you be a good indie developer AND a parent?

The stresses, and joys, of balancing your creative work with raising children has proved challenging. "How do you manage the demands of being a good parent and continue to create great creative work?" he asked the crowd at the Game Developers Conference. It's a big question, perhaps the biggest question if you're a parent or are thinking about becoming a parent. "This is something that I’ve personally struggled with ever since my boy was born and there’s days, and sometimes weeks, where my passion for making game trailers isn’t where I’d like it to be, simply because the demands of raising a 2 year-old takes a higher priority," he continued. It’s easy to get lost in your work and spend hours upon hours on projects when you don’t have a kid, but that changes when you’re responsible...

Two GOG sales cut prices on Fez, The Banner Saga, Spelunky, more

GOG.com is offering two concurrent promotions with deep discounts on a variety of games from major publishers and indies such as Fez, Alan Wake and Spelunky, the digital distribution platform announced today. To mark St. Patrick's Day, the "Luck of the Irish" sale allows customers to put together their own five-game bundles from a selection of 25 titles that are discounted by as much as 90 percent. Any or all of the five choices in the bundle can be a "Pot of Gold," in which GOG will randomly select a game that isn't listed among the 25 options. The deals on that list include Mossmouth's Spelunky for $3 (regularly $14.99), Facepalm Games' The Swapper for $3 (reg. $14.99), Polytron's Fez for $2 (reg. $9.99) and Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake for $3 (reg. $29.99). At the same time,...

Spelunky creator thought the new world record was 'impossible'

Spelunky creator Derek Yu used to believe scoring 3 million points was all but impossible, but that was before master Spelunky player Banasaurus Rex put that theory to rest last week. We spoke to the Spelunky creator after Bananasaurus Rex ended a nearly 7.5-hour streaming session with a score that topped 3.1 million, crushing the previous world record. "He achieved the impossible!" Yu said. "As in, we were so confident that an over 3 million score was impossible that pre-patch, the game actually thought you were cheating if you submitted a score that high. I'm going to have to watch the video to see how he did it." Yu went on to explain why metrics like that are ineffective for the notoriously difficult procedurally generated platformer. "When the game was first released we...

Watch a Spelunky master demolish records with more than $3 million

Bananasaurus Rex needed to score more than 2.6 million points — dollars, in Spelunky terms — to rise to the top of the leaderboard in Derek Yu's infamously difficult game. This afternoon, he leapt through that barrier when he scored $2,683,050, a moment you can relive in the video above. Though you'll hear the surprise in Bananasaurus Rex's voice when he realizes what he's done, his record-breaking run didn't stop there. By the time he was through playing, he'd scored $3,105,850. Press play below to see the moment he topped $3 million. You can watch the entire 7.5 hour run on his Twitch page. <img src='/images/manage/video-placeholder.png' width=640 height=360 class='mceItemFlash' embed_src='<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"...
