Spelunky review: digging deep

As an Indiana Jones-like adventurer, the player navigates his way downward through a series of ancient mines with the ultimate goal of escape — preferably with a bounty of treasure. However, unlike the stages of a Super Mario Bros. game, which are the same every time they are played, the mines of Spelunky never repeat. In the context of Spelunky's story, the mines are mysteriously transformed by the power of trickster gods. Under the hood, the mines are actually the product of something even more malevolent: the complex math of procedural generation. Each stage's layout — the entrance and exit, the weapons and enemies, the treasures and booby traps — are dynamically generated. As are side-quests, like where might a damsel in distress call for help or a shopkeeper...

Watch this Spelunky player set a new world record

A new world record has been set in the tunnel exploration game Spelunky, and the record-breaking run can be viewed in full above. Twitch user YamaYamaDingDong ended his run at four hours and 45 minutes with a final score of $3,109,850. The 18-year-old overtook the previous record held by user Bananasaurus_Rex, whose seven and a half hour run resulted in a score of $3,105,850. Earlier this year, Spelunky creator Derek Yu commented on the then-world record, telling Polygon he didn't believe a score over 3 million points was possible prior to watching the video of Bananasaurus_Rex. "He achieved the impossible!" Yu told us. "As in, we were so confident that an over 3 million score was impossible that pre-patch, the game actually thought you were cheating if you submitted a score that...

Having it all: Can you be a good indie developer AND a parent?

The stresses, and joys, of balancing your creative work with raising children has proved challenging. "How do you manage the demands of being a good parent and continue to create great creative work?" he asked the crowd at the Game Developers Conference. It's a big question, perhaps the biggest question if you're a parent or are thinking about becoming a parent. "This is something that I’ve personally struggled with ever since my boy was born and there’s days, and sometimes weeks, where my passion for making game trailers isn’t where I’d like it to be, simply because the demands of raising a 2 year-old takes a higher priority," he continued. It’s easy to get lost in your work and spend hours upon hours on projects when you don’t have a kid, but that changes when you’re...

Two GOG sales cut prices on Fez, The Banner Saga, Spelunky, more

GOG.com is offering two concurrent promotions with deep discounts on a variety of games from major publishers and indies such as Fez, Alan Wake and Spelunky, the digital distribution platform announced today. To mark St. Patrick's Day, the "Luck of the Irish" sale allows customers to put together their own five-game bundles from a selection of 25 titles that are discounted by as much as 90 percent. Any or all of the five choices in the bundle can be a "Pot of Gold," in which GOG will randomly select a game that isn't listed among the 25 options. The deals on that list include Mossmouth's Spelunky for $3 (regularly $14.99), Facepalm Games' The Swapper for $3 (reg. $14.99), Polytron's Fez for $2 (reg. $9.99) and Remedy Entertainment's Alan Wake for $3 (reg. $29.99). At the same time,...

Spelunky creator thought the new world record was 'impossible'

Spelunky creator Derek Yu used to believe scoring 3 million points was all but impossible, but that was before master Spelunky player Banasaurus Rex put that theory to rest last week. We spoke to the Spelunky creator after Bananasaurus Rex ended a nearly 7.5-hour streaming session with a score that topped 3.1 million, crushing the previous world record. "He achieved the impossible!" Yu said. "As in, we were so confident that an over 3 million score was impossible that pre-patch, the game actually thought you were cheating if you submitted a score that high. I'm going to have to watch the video to see how he did it." Yu went on to explain why metrics like that are ineffective for the notoriously difficult procedurally generated platformer. "When the game was first released we...

Watch a Spelunky master demolish records with more than $3 million

Bananasaurus Rex needed to score more than 2.6 million points — dollars, in Spelunky terms — to rise to the top of the leaderboard in Derek Yu's infamously difficult game. This afternoon, he leapt through that barrier when he scored $2,683,050, a moment you can relive in the video above. Though you'll hear the surprise in Bananasaurus Rex's voice when he realizes what he's done, his record-breaking run didn't stop there. By the time he was through playing, he'd scored $3,105,850. Press play below to see the moment he topped $3 million. You can watch the entire 7.5 hour run on his Twitch page. <img src='/images/manage/video-placeholder.png' width=640 height=360 class='mceItemFlash' embed_src='<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"...

Samus goes spelunking in Metroid mod for Spelunky

Samus Aran has plenty of experience exploring caves, and that's exactly what she does in this incredible Metroid mod for Spelunky. The mod, which was provided to livestreamer BaerTaffy by a developer who goes by joey4track, consists of a full audiovisual reskin of Spelunky. The game's brown caves become purple, while enemies and other parts of the world appear as Metroid analogs. The developer also brought in the series' music — the first level features the title theme from the original Metroid on NES. Joey4track has not yet made the full mod available publicly; he said he probably won't release it until he's done reskinning all four of Spelunky's main areas. For now, you can check out his thread in the Mossmouth forums and watch a half-hour playthrough above.

Henchmen in games don't need a story, but they need a purpose

You probably remember how the series works: You, the heroic investigator, have to jet around the world chasing Carmen's henchmen, using clues that you pick up along the way to find your next stop and to identify who you're looking for. I wrote the bulk of the location clues, which meant that for each of the 66 cities in the game, I had to think of at least 50 things that would lead you straight to that spot. It was a pretty grueling job. I still can't look at a Lonely Planet or a Rough Guide book without thinking to myself, "I should look up the sports stadiums. Every city has one of those." As I was writing the clues, I often had a chance to write about those henchmen that you were chasing: The minions who weren't as colorful as Carmen Sandiego, or as dangerous, but who were somehow...

Spelunky 1.4 update adds 'Pro' HUD and save backup, fixes bugs

Spelunky developer Mossmouth updated the Windows PC version of the celebrated permadeath platformer to version 1.4 today, adding player-requested features like a redesigned HUD and backup saves, the studio announced today. The new "Pro" HUD can be enabled with a setting in the game's graphics menu. It's a "less obtrusive" option, according to Mossmouth, and it also includes a level timer. Those features will be a boon to individuals like the skilled players who run Spelunky livestreams and attempt to speed-run the game or pull off feats like solo Eggplant runs. Also included in the 1.4 update are a system to create backup save games and a whole host of bug fixes for issues like crashes and glitches. According to Mossmouth, the patch will soon be available for the GOG.com version of S...

Spelunky mod lets you choose levels to share with friends

A mod for the randomly level-generating indie game Spelunky now lets players choose particular levels to share with friends, Eurogamer reports. With Seedlunky HD, users can create a custom "seed" that when shared allows for other players to load and play that same level without it generating randomly. The mod, which was created by user Too Many Notes from the official Mossmouth studio forums, will not work for the game's Daily Challenge mode that already allows players to play the same set of levels just once; However, it does offer a number of fixes to the core game, including one for a glitch that causes a ghost to kill the player during an intro cutscene. Daily challenges were introduced to the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita versions of the game late last year after originally being...

BioShock Infinite joins PS Plus as Sony begins '14 for '14' sale

Irrational Games' BioShock Infinite will become the latest addition to the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection when Sony updates the PlayStation Store tomorrow, the company announced today. BioShock Infinite was originally released on PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360 in March 2013, and went on to garner widespread acclaim as well as a critical backlash regarding elements such as its use of graphic violence. Infinite regularly costs $39.99 on the PS Store. Irrational is currently working on Burial at Sea - Episode Two, the conclusion to the game's story expansion. Earlier this month, Sony added DmC: Devil May Cry and the PlayStation 4 version of Don't Starve to the Instant Game Collection. Tomorrow, the company will begin its "14 for '14" sale, which cuts prices on 14 PS3...
