Star Trek Online is launching its next major content update, Season 9: A New Accord on April 22, developer Perfect World announced. Season 9 continues where the story left off in the last episode, A Step Between Stars. The new chapter includes new Space and ground events, a new Space Battlezone and refinements to the gameplay system. Additionally, players can earn bonus experience in the massively multiplayer title between April 14-21 in order to get caught up on previous seasons.

The Mac client for free-to-play massively multiplayer online title Star Trek Online is now live, according to an announcement on the game's official forums. The client can be downloaded via Arc Games' product page and selecting the "Play for Free" option. Initially rolling out to Windows PC in 2010, the Star Trek Online Mac beta began last November, coinciding with the first day of the game's season eight launch. "We have wrapped up our Open Beta testing period, and we want to extend our warmest welcome to the STO Universe to all Mac users," the statement reads. Star Trek Online's winter event will take place in Q’s Winter Wonderland from Dec. 5 through Jan. 16, publisher Perfect World Entertainment announced today. As the location's name implies, the event in Cryptic Studios' massively multiplayer online role-playing game is the work of Q, the god-like being who first appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation's pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint." Continuing his tradition of pawing at humans like a cat with a ball of string, Q has created a gingerbread colony and populated it with legions of angry snowmen for players to battle. The Mac beta for free-to-play massively multiplayer online title Star Trek Online launches Nov. 12, according to a post on the game's official forums. The announcement was originally made during a livestream by community manager Brandon Felczer. Felczer later confirmed the date via the forum post; no other details were provided. The beta starts the day of the game's season eight launch. Season eight will add new Klingon starships, the Voth alien faction, end-game content and more. Star Trek Online launched for Windows PC in 2010.

Perfect World Entertainment, publisher of Blacklight: Retribution and Star Trek Online, is moving into mobile development and publishing, the company announced today. Publisher Perfect World Entertainment Inc. and Cryptic Studios have formed a new development division called Cryptic North, to assist Cryptic Studios in the ongoing growth of free-to-play superhero massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Champions Online, and provide support for other MMO titles. The Seattle-based studio is also working with Cryptic Studios to provide development support with sci-fi MMO Star Trek Online and free-to-play fantasy MMO Neverwinter. Perfect World Entertainment detailed the Romulan Republic personnel in Star Trek Online's upcoming expansion, Legacy of Romulus, in a recent dev blog on the game's official site. In the new expansion, players can chose to be a Federation, Klingon Empire, or Romulan Republic captain. Romulan Republic faction players have access to faction-specific Bridge and Duty Officers, that can only be used by Romulan Captains. Romulan players can get access to Duty Officers by conducting recruitment assignments offered by the Duty Officer Recruitment contact located at New Romulus Command. Star Trek Online's upcoming expansion, Legacy of Romulus, will feature a new playable species called the Reman, according to a recent dev blog on the game's official site. Players will be able to pick up the Reman species by purchasing it through the site store or Legacy Pack. The species can also be earned by achieving Tier 5 in New Romulus Reputation. The Reman will come with several special features, including exclusive trait options, ship materials and a new psychic attack called Mind Drain. Star Trek Online publisher Perfect World Entertainment will offer a slew of tiered special items to players when the Legacy of Romulus expansion goes live, according to a blog post by senior producer Steve "Salamilnferno" Ricossa, Jr.. Gold, silver and lifetime players will receive a playable Alien-Gen Hybrid Romulan species. John Needham, former CEO of Cryptic Studios and Gazillion Entertainment, has been appointed studio head of Fable developer Lionhead Studios, according to a recent posting on the developer's website. As CEO, Needham oversaw development studios that have created games like City of Heroes and Star Trek Online (Cryptic) and Marvel Heroes (Gazillion).
