Blizzard suing 10 StarCraft 2 hackers over cheat software

Blizzard Entertainment filed suit against 10 unnamed StarCraft 2 hackers this week, alleging that their actions cause "serious harm to the value" of the game.  According to the complaint filed May 19 in a California court, the defendants circumvent Blizzard's Warden software, which prevents unauthorized access to the game, stops users from loading unauthorized copies and monitors StarCraft 2 for "malicious or unauthorized software products," thus preventing cheats and hacks. Bypassing Warden violates's Terms of Use and the game's End User License Agreement, according to the document.  Blizzard believes that the 10 defendants distribute, develop or sell the unauthorized software, are "well aware" of Blizzard's prohibitions and cause "immediate, massive and irreparable" harm...


'Ender's Game' film producers launch StarCraft 2 tournament (update)

The production companies behind last year's Ender's Game film are launching a new kind of movie tie-in this week: a $20,000 StarCraft 2 tournament featuring 32 of the top players in the U.S., the companies announced today. Lionsgate and OddLot Entertainment are partnering with Major League Gaming and Twitch for the competition, which is known as the "Ender's Game on Blu-ray Tournament." Two qualifying rounds featuring 16 players each will take place over the next two weeks: The first will run from Feb. 5-9 on Twitch, and the second will run from Feb. 11-16 on MLG.TV. Dive into the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls Collector's Edition

Diablo 3 developer Blizzard Entertainment provided details today on the Collector's Edition of the game's upcoming expansion, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, with an image showing off all of its contents on The Collector's Edition contains a trove of physical goods. Inside are a disc copy of the expansion on both Mac and Windows PC; a soundtrack CD; a two-disc "Behind the Scenes" Blu-ray/DVD set; and a hardcover copy of The Art of Reaper of Souls. Blizzard begins rolling out StarCraft 2 Patch 2.1

The long-awaited Patch 2.1 for StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm is rolling out this week, developer Blizzard Entertainment announced today. According to Blizzard's schedule for the gradual rollout, the studio released the patch today in the Americas and Europe. Patch 2.1 will be available Jan. 22 in China, Korea and Taiwan, and Jan. 23 in Oceania and Southeast Asia. Blizzard acknowledged that the schedule is different for the latter two regions, which usually get patches on Mondays; the studio said that it will return to that plan for future patches. Players will be asked to update StarCraft 2 once they connect to a server in a region that has already received the patch. StarCraft 2 patch 2.1's Carbot rewards and quad XP bonus

StarCraft 2 patch 2.1 will bring new rewards and a significant XP boost to the real-time strategy game, according to a post today. Blizzard will include the Carbot Animations-themed portraits and decals pictured below for each race, for a total of six. To earn the decals and portraits, players need to reach levels 32 and 35, respectively, with Protoss, Terran or Zerg. Blizzard will also quadruple the XP associated with the "First Win of the Day" bonus, so that each day's first win will reward players 100,000 XP. Blizzard details clan, group changes in StarCraft 2 Patch 2.1

Patch 2.1 for StarCraft 2 will include a bunch of changes to clans and groups, including interface optimizations and usability improvements, explained developer Blizzard Entertainment in a blog post yesterday. Club officers and owners will now be able to create events with a new Events tab at the top of a clan or group window. This allows those individuals to schedule events like practices and other activities on a club-wide basis. Clubs can also be personalized with custom image uploads for club icons. A different customization option will be available in Patch 2.1 for clans. Blizzard extends Black Friday sale to Jan 1

Blizzard Entertainment is extending its Black Friday sale to Jan. 1, the company announced today. The original Black Friday sale included discounts of up to 75 percent on World of Warcraft, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria and World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Digital Deluxe Edition. It also offered 50 percent off StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm and Heart of the Swarm Digital Deluxe Edition. The European store offered (and continues to offer at the time of writing) similar discounts. All the digital offers can be gifted. The sale in the U.S. store ends Jan. 1, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. PT.

Esports web series visits Red Bull's StarCraft 2 training grounds

The latest installment of "This is eSports" visits Red Bull's National Headquarters, where StarCraft 2 players are training for a chance at entering a major tournament. Eight pro players from Europe, North America and Korea are here training and practicing, says the event coordinator Rob Simpson. This is where they get the chance to try something new and work out troubles in their gameplay. The winner of the mini-tournament will receive $2,500 and be entered in Red Bull's marquee tournament Battlegrounds later this year, a StarCraft 2 event with $50,000 in prize money up for grabs. BlizzCon Virtual Tickets now on sale for $39.99

Blizzard Entertainment fans who can't make it to BlizzCon in person will be able to watch the festivities by purchasing a Virtual Ticket, which is now on sale, the studio announced today. For $39.99, buyers get access to two high-definition livestreams that cover both days of the convention, which runs from Nov. 8-9 in Anaheim, Calif., at the Anaheim Convention Center. That includes panels and interviews with Blizzard developers, the Costume Contest and Talent Contest (hosted by comedian Jay Mohr), the closing ceremony and access to on-demand replays for up to two weeks after the end of the show.
