Between a Rockman and a Hard Place: The Fan-made Mega Man

A light in the dark A light in the dark At the start of 2010, it was a good time to be a Mega Man (or Rockman as he's called in Japan) fan. Capcom's retro-revival of the franchise, starting with Mega Man 9 in 2008 and continuing with Mega Man 10 shortly after, had received both positive reviews from critics and a great deal of adulation from players. The diminutive, gun-armed protagonist first appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, and the success of these new games meant a greater possibility of more Mega Man to look forward to. When Capcom announced plans during the 2010 New York Comic Con to revive the Mega Man Legends series with a new Nintendo 3DS game, it seemed as if the company was treating this return as more than a trifling affair. Production on a...

Street Fighter X Mega Man surpasses one million downloads worldwide

Capcom's free Windows PC title Street Fighter X Mega Man and its recent "Version 2" update have surpassed one million downloads worldwide, the company claims. "The precise number of downloads is a bit tricky, because the file's freeware status means people could upload it to any ol' file service and share indefinitely," senior online/community manager Brett Elston wrote on the blog. "So while we can be sure we hit one million tracked downloads, there's no telling how many people grabbed it from another source. "Suffice it to say, it got around." Street Fighter X Mega Man was released Dec. 17, 2012 to celebrate the tail end of Street Fighter's 25th anniversary and marked the beginning of that of Mega Man, which started this year. An updated version of the crossover fighter was...

Street Fighter X Mega Man adds password feature, performance tweaks on Jan. 18

Capcom will release an updated version of its free PC game Street Fighter X Mega Man this Friday, Jan. 18, smoothing a few of the game's "rough edges" and adding a Mega Man 2-style password feature. According to Capcom Unity, Street Fighter X Mega Man V2 will fix a handful of bugs, improve the game's controller support and make M. Bison a bit stronger. The update will also address performance issues related to playing the game on Intel integrated GPUs. Additional changes are detailed on the Capcom Unity blog. The update, like Street Fighter X Mega Man itself, will be free to download and play on Windows PC when Capcom sets it live this Friday around 5 p.m. PT.

Street Fighter X Mega Man 'Version 2' on the way, will address design issues

Capcom is planning to release an updated version of free PC game Street Fighter X Mega Man soon to address issues with the initial release, according to Capcom's senior community manager Brett Elston in a recent interview with The Mega Man Network. Elston said that Capcom recognizes there are "a few rough edges left" on the game due to it's tight development window in working with creator Zong Hui and his small team. "Version 2" will "tighten up" the title and address issues commonly reported in player feedback. The update will not add any new content. Street Fighter X Mega Man is not available on other platforms because Windows PC was the easiest to utilize when pushing out a free game. "Bringing it elsewhere requires all sorts of approvals, submissions and so on, which affect price...

Street Fighter X Mega Man is part apology to Mega Man fans, part proof of life, says Capcom

The next Mega Man game is an odd one. It's free, strictly for Windows PC (for now), a crossover with the Street Fighter universe and conceived by a Capcom "superfan." It's also something of a "mea culpa" from Capcom to longtime fans who might still feel stung by the dual cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe. Street Fighter X Mega Man, announced this past weekend and planned for release on Dec. 17, is in some ways an attempt to make good on past promises from Capcom while celebrating the 25th anniversaries of two of the publisher's iconic brands. "To some degree, there is a bit of a mea culpa here and part of the reason why I wanted to [release the game]," Capcom senior vice president Christian Svensson told Polygon in an interview. "It was a great way for us to...

Street Fighter X Mega Man coming Dec. 17

Street Fighter X Mega Man, a free PC download featuring 8-bit-style crossovers from both respective series, will release on Dec. 17, Capcom announced. The crossover is a celebration of the end of Street Fighter's 25th anniversary and the beginning of Mega Man's, which kicks off in 2013. Mega Man will face off against eight different Street Fighter characters, including Chun Li, Blanka and Ryu, with eight new weapons. Capcom is calling the crossover "a true collaboration" between the company and its fans, as the original game was drafted by superfan Seow Zong Hui and presented to Senior Vice President of Capcom USA Christian Svensson during EVO 2012. The game will also feature an 8-bit soundtrack from A_Rival featuring Street Fighter and Mega Man mashups. Street Figher X Mega Man will...
