Super Hexagon, VVVVVV headed to Ouya

Terry Cavanagh's Super Hexagon and VVVVVV are heading to the Ouya Android-based mini-console, the developer announced in a post on his blog. Twitch action game Super Hexagon — which initially launched for iOS in fall 2012 — is slated to hit Ouya next Tuesday. The game is based off Cavanagh's Hexagon, one of the developer's earlier concepts creating during a game jam earlier that year. Cavanagh also noted that he recently submitted 2D puzzle platformer VVVVVV to the iTunes App Store and is currently working on the Android version as well. The iOS version will feature a swipe-and-hold control scheme and Cavanagh noted in a post in April that this scheme is "super responsive." VVVVVV will launch on Ouya the same time as the Android and iOS ports. A PlayStation Vita port is also in the...

Flappy Bird and inspired cloning: Indie devs explore what made a controversial game fun

There have been endless words written about the game, and its creator has been painted as both a villain and a victim. Dong Nguyen may be someone who understood how to game the system, or an indie developer who is innocent of the ways of mobile apps. The game has been called a scam, while others have praised many aspects of its design and execution. Other developers have shrugged and done what developers do: They went to work making games based on, or inspired by, Flappy Bird. The results of the so-called Flappy Jam aren’t only much more enjoyable that you’d expect, they actively explore what made the original so fascinating to so many people. Flapping, parabolas and fun Regardless of how Flappy Bird came to be on the top of the app charts, the fact remains that masses of people...

Micro Hexagon brings Super Hexagon to the Commodore 64

Developers Paul Koller and Mikkel Hastrup created a Commodore 64 version of Terry Cavanagh's Super Hexagon, an action twitch-based game that was originally released for iOS, Android and PC. Titled Micro Hexagon, it was programmed by Koller for the second RGCD Cartridge Development Competition, a contest where developers submit games in working 16KB cartridge ROM format. The games submitted don't have to be original works, but they have to have been made for the Commodore 64 by the developer. Micro Hexagon adapts Cavanagh's PC and mobile title to the old school personal computer. In the video above, the game is played on a CRT monitor, but it can also be downloaded and played on an emulator. Koller has previously ported other titles to the Commodore 64, such as Adam Saltsman's C...

Super Hexagon and VVVVVV creator Terry Cavanagh's new project is a 'proper, meaty puzzle game' tentatively titled Halting Problem, according to an update on his website. "A proper, meaty puzzle game is something I've wanted to make for ages, and I'm having lots of fun just messing around with the mechanics for this one and seeing what I can make out of them," Cavanagh wrote. "It's inspired by DROD, but also things like Qrostar games, Zachtronic games, and my flatmate Increpare's games." Cavanagh wrote that he is "really excited" about Halting Problem and that he is going to make it "my main focus for a while." In April, Cavanagh posted a Vine clip showcasing several cancelled projects, including a first-person shooter and a dance-based role-playing game. Last year, Cavanagh's retro...

Notch unveils free ceiling-inspired Unity game called Drop, playable now

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson unveiled Drop, a free Unity game available to play now, the developer revealed on his Twitter account. According to Notch, the game was mainly inspired by a section of ceiling in his apartment, as well as Fez's ending and Super Hexagon. Gameplay consists of gamers typing in the corresponding blinking letters on the screen and pressing space or enter to advance. Bonus points are awarded if more than four letters are entered at a time. The game speeds up if the wrong letter is entered and it's game over if a letter leaves the screen. According to Notch's Twitter, he shared Drop's code with game developer Mike Bithell, the creator of Thomas Was Alone, who then built an Oculus Rift version of the game.
