Notch unveils free ceiling-inspired Unity game called Drop, playable now

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson unveiled Drop, a free Unity game available to play now, the developer revealed on his Twitter account. According to Notch, the game was mainly inspired by a section of ceiling in his apartment, as well as Fez's ending and Super Hexagon. Gameplay consists of gamers typing in the corresponding blinking letters on the screen and pressing space or enter to advance. Bonus points are awarded if more than four letters are entered at a time. The game speeds up if the wrong letter is entered and it's game over if a letter leaves the screen. According to Notch's Twitter, he shared Drop's code with game developer Mike Bithell, the creator of Thomas Was Alone, who then built an Oculus Rift version of the game.

Super Hexagon developer cancels Nexus City and its spin-off to start with a clean slate

Super Hexagon developer Terry Cavanagh has abandoned Nexus City, a role-playing game he was working on with writer Jonas Kyratzes, because "the momentum is long gone now" and he has decided to move onto other things. Posting to his personal blog, Cavanagh writes that Nexus City began as a very small game but grew out of control, weighing heavily on his mind. I've been thinking of Nexus City as "the thing I'm working on" since 2010. As a result, for a long time now, I've felt like I wasn't really in control of what I can work on. Promising games would come along, and I'd stop myself from getting too deep into them, because I had to finish Nexus City first. Everything became a big ordered list of what I could work on and when, how long I could spend on it. It's only when a project...

Super Hexagon launching on Steam next week

Super Hexagon, indie developer Terry Cavanagh's hardcore maze-navigating game, will make its way to Steam for PC and Mac on Nov. 27, Cavanagh revealed on his blog today. The game launched earlier this year on iOS devices for $2.99, which is the same price tag it will carry on Steam. Cavanagh explained that the delay between the game's smartphone and Steam versions is because he "wasn't happy with the performance of the flash version." As a result, Cavanagh rewrote the entire game in C++, allowing it to run in higher resolutions than its previous iterations. The Steam version brings with it the same social features of the iOS version — namely, leaderboards to showcase how long you've lasted across the game's six increasingly trying difficulty modes. Cavanagh hopes to launch the game...
