Brownie Brown, the Nintendo-owned studio that co-developed games such as Mother 3 and Super Mario 3D Land, is rebranding itself as 1-Up Studio, the company announced today. Brownie Brown was founded in 2000 as a Nintendo subsidiary by former members of Square, the Japanese company behind franchises such as Final Fantasy and Mana. The company has only developed games for Nintendo handhelds, from the Game Boy Advance through the 3DS. In addition to making Nintendo games such as the aforementioned titles, Brownie Brown has worked on games with outside developers and publishers, including Heroes of Mana with Square Enix and Professor Layton and the Last Specter with Level-5. Animal Crossing: New Leaf, sold two million copies in its first two months of release, making it the first Nintendo 3DS title to ever crack the two million mark, Japanese games industry magazine Famitsu reports via Tiny Cartridge. The game has sold 2.1 million units, which puts it ahead of other 3DS titles like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Monster Hunter 3G, and New Super Mario Bros. 2. The sales for Animal Crossing: New Leaf also eclipse those of the best-selling PlayStation 3 game — Final Fantasy 13, which sold 1.9 million copies in Japan. Animal Crossing: New Leaf still falls behind the best-selling game on the Nintendo Wii — New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which sold 4.4 million copies in Japan.

A limited-edition 3DS bundle will be available for the holiday season: a Flame Red 3DS with Super Mario 3D Land pre-installed for $169.99, Nintendo announced today. The package offers a savings of $39.99, the cost of Super Mario 3D Land alone, since the 3DS's regular price is $169.99. Super Mario 3D Land originally launched in November 2011. An image of the bundle can be seen above — it doesn't appear that the 3DS itself is customized with any Mario branding. Some retailers, including Toys R Us and GameStop, already had the Super Mario 3D Land bundle listed among their Black Friday deals. Best Buy and Target will offer an additional $20 off the 3DS.
