As Project Spark beta begins, players seek new creative paths

Project Spark is a free-to-play game level construction kit with a Lord of the Rings look and feel. It's easy to demonstrate crafting an epic fantasy landscape, a hero, sidekicks, enemies and monsters while imbuing all those elements with basic combat patterns. The Microsoft and Team Dakota product also allows you to act out animations via Kinect and import those into your games, so much emphasis has been placed on stories featuring characters. It's come as a surprise to the developers, that many of the games actually being created on Project Spark, by real consumers, are deviating significantly from this template. The beta opens today for 250,000 people, with a cap of one million planned, before final and full launch later this year on Xbox One and Windows PC. For the last few...

Closure dev reveals multiplayer brawler called Bombernauts

Closure developer Tyler Glaiel is working on a multiplayer brawler called Bombernauts, he revealed in the game's FAQ. Bombernauts will include a level editor, along with mod support post-release "if the community demands it." According to Glaiel, there are plenty ideas for custom game modes, customization and special powerups. "Powerup customization similar to the Super Smash Bros series, plus being able to set permanent powerups for all players (such as all jetpack mode), or which powerups get rewarded for doing certain things in game," Glaiel wrote. The game's art will be created under Sven Ruthner while its music will be composed by Danny Baranowsky, who has created soundtracks for games such as Super Meat Boy, Canabalt and The Binding of Isaac. Closure, the black-and-white...

How indie games went mainstream

Both Microsoft and Sony have drummed up their support for indie games, bringing indie titles to their press conferences and devoting large portions of their floor space at events like E3 and Gamescom to smaller titles. Even newcomer console maker Ouya has based its entire existence around independent games. It was only a few years ago when independent game developers sat on the fringes of the games industry — their numbers seemed small and their chances for success even smaller. Today, it's hard to imagine the industry without them. This didn't happen by accident. According to the developers and publishers Polygon spoke to, many factors played a part in fueling the steam train that is indie games, and these factors are now changing the way the industry does business. "... The...

Super Meat Boy dev says Steam Controller is a 'great start, needs some improvements'

Tommy Refenes of Super Meat Boy's Team Meat went hands-on with Valve's recently-unveiled Steam Controller, noting in a recent blog post that while the hardware is off to a "great start" it "needs some improvements." Refenes — who admits that he is "very picky about controls in games, to the point if the game doesn't control well, I don't care who makes it or what it is, I will stop playing it" — tested the new controller on his own Super Meat Boy and Mossmouth's Spelunky, both of which he was able to play comfortably after some tweaking. Refenes called the controller "strange." He noted that the prototype he tested did not have a functional touchscreen, but said the buttons surrounding it can be thought of as "additional functionality" for different in-game actions. These buttons...

Mew-Genics won't be playable at PAX after all, but here's a teaser trailer

Team Meat will no longer be showing their upcoming iOS and Steam game, Mew-Genics, at PAX this weekend because they don't believe the demo will do the game justice, but they did release this new trailer. Mew-Genics is still very much a nebulous thing. As catchy as this new trailer (featuring music by Ridiculon) is, it doesn't really help define the game much more. Edmund McMillen, in his email announcing the trailer, describes the game as many things, all of them cat-centric. It is a cat breeding sim, a cat fighting sim, a cat hoarding sim, a cat pageant sim, a cat racing sim, he wrote. "At its foundation Mew-Genics is a randomly generated game that gives back the more you play it ... and its honestly quite hard to sum up in one articulate sentence," he wrote. "The best we can do...

Mew-Genics moves beyond cat hoarding, introduces new character

Mew-Genics, the upcoming game from the developers of Super Meat Boy, will move beyond cat hoarding to "more traditional hoarding" and will feature an accident prone child called Baby Jack, according to an update its official blog. Baby Jack is the manager of the in-game store, Hoarders R Us, which will allow players to collect new items. But, according to developer Edmund McMillen, it "wont be your basic hoarding sim" and the "furniture in the shop has significance that goes beyond pathological collecting." "Every day Jack stocks the store with pieces of his Nonas collection, bringing you amazing things for your house as well as aiding in her eventual escape from the confines of her self imposed tomb." McMillen wrote on the blog. He went to say that the freedom to change a game's...
