One day in, Steam Tags are often more abusive than useful (update)

Valve launched Steam Tags yesterday, whereby Steam users can categorize games with any label they can think of, and while some Steam users are using the feature as it was designed, others are already abusing it in a variety of inappropriate and ugly ways. Steam Tags have only been available for a day, and at this point, the tags on many games tend to be less useful as labels and more indicative of the problems that Steam users have with those games and their developers. Sometimes, people are raising legitimate concerns about a game; other times, they're just trolling. Numerous threads in Valve's Steam Tagging Beta sub-forum offer comments about issues with Steam Tags. Some individuals are complaining about trolling, such as tags that contain spoilers. Other users point out that...

Sword & Sworcery began as iOS hit, became Humble Bundle star

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP launched in spring 2011 on iOS and has since reached more than 1.5 million copies sold on five platforms, and developer Capybara Games released an infographic today with details of the adventure game's sales history. More than 550,000 of Capybara's 1.5 million unit sales, one-third, have come on iOS. And partly because 86 percent of those iOS copies were sold at full price, the company has received 55 percent of the game's total net revenue on that platform alone. On the other hand, Capybara has recorded relatively low sales of the game's Android version through Google Play, with only 5 percent of total sales and 5 percent of total net revenue coming from Google's app store. And even then, just 23 percent of the Google Play purchases were made at...

Paid apps aren't dead in the era of free-to-play, Capy co-founder says at GDC

Reports of the death of paid apps have been greatly exaggerated, co-founder and president of Capybara Games Nathan Vella said in a talk at GDC 2013. The Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP developer acknowledges that 2013 will likely be crowned "the era of free-to-play." As proof, he offered charts showing that 66 percent of apps published in 2012 were free-to-play. That's the inverse of the market as it was in 2010. According to Vella, the free-to-play model is in ascension because of the pricing model's recent success stories. Developers follow trends, he said. In 2010, many chased Angry Birds. Today, developers are chasing successful free-to-play hits like Clash of Clans because they see in-app purchase pricing models as the "next cash cow." But acknowledging the success of...
