Tearaway review: new sensation

The papercraft heart of Tearaway isn't just its core design aesthetic, nor is it just a gameplay gimmick; it's absolutely everything and everywhere. I can't think of another title that has leaned so heavily upon, and so thoroughly explored, a single idea. The user interface is made of paper. Every single particle effect. Every centimeter of the game's world is made of paper; no corners were cut, save for the ones literally cut out of paper. When combined with clever devices that utilize the PS Vita's every function, the paper world comes to life in a very real way. It's a physical, tactile experience that creases, folds and rips around your godlike input. From sound design to art design to core gameplay mechanics, every aspect of the paper premise has been explored. Tearaway's...

E3 2014: What we probably (and definitely) won't see this week

The past month or so has been rife with announcements that certain games and companies will not have a presence at E3 this year. From highly-anticipated titles announced almost eight years ago to high-level executives sitting it out to take it easy, here's what you probably won't, and definitely won't, see at E3. Absence confirmed Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3: These two Square Enix role-playing games are earning mystical unicorn status by virtue of being announced too early and then failing to appear at E3 year after year. We got some information at last year's expo, where Square announced both would come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But earlier this week, producer Shinji Hashimoto told Famitsu that neither game would have a presence at E3 and more details on both games...

Henchmen in games don't need a story, but they need a purpose

You probably remember how the series works: You, the heroic investigator, have to jet around the world chasing Carmen's henchmen, using clues that you pick up along the way to find your next stop and to identify who you're looking for. I wrote the bulk of the location clues, which meant that for each of the 66 cities in the game, I had to think of at least 50 things that would lead you straight to that spot. It was a pretty grueling job. I still can't look at a Lonely Planet or a Rough Guide book without thinking to myself, "I should look up the sports stadiums. Every city has one of those." As I was writing the clues, I often had a chance to write about those henchmen that you were chasing: The minions who weren't as colorful as Carmen Sandiego, or as dangerous, but who were somehow...

How Tearaway sought the mundane to create something magical

Speaking at the DICE convention in Las Vegas today, Crowle talked about "using the ordinary to create extraordinary." Tearaway, one of Polygon's top ten games of 2013, takes place in a world made of paper and utilizes many of PlayStation Vita's hardware functionality like the camera and back touchpad. "We try to merge the player's world with the world that they are playing with, to make something interesting out of the mundane," said Crowle. "We used paper but there are a lot of other materials available and I am sure players are delighted by them, rather than just another slippy-slidey world." In Tearaway, players can reach into the world with their fingers, using the back touchpad. They can create paper artifacts in the world, like an custom crown for a squirrel. They can insert...

Polygon's Games of the Year 2013 #10: Tearaway

It's almost crazy that a video game can build its success on creating a world out of paper, a form that requires no cables or controllers to speak of, at least in the real world. But Tearaway takes that idea of playing with paper and makes every tap, swipe and button press mean something to that medium. Every inch of the Vita is utilized, down to the camera to take silly selfies of yourself in the sun (which, if you played Tearaway correctly, you did often). And not only does Media Molecule's commitment to the paper idea stretch across mechanics and glossy landscapes, but it's in the audio as well. There is something inherently satisfying about hearing paper presents pop open, folds rip and scraps flutter in a gentle breeze. That rustling papery noise, combined with watching...
