Terraria review: gold mine gutted

Terraria doesn't have much of a story, but each randomly-generated world shares certain features that form an arc for the game. Your created character spawns somewhere around the middle of the 2D map, and then it's a race to chop down trees, build a house, and craft new armor and weapons from various ores underground. A natural progression of those ores as you dig deeper — copper, then iron, then silver, etc. — determines when you're ready to ready to take on the game's handful of difficult boss encounters. 505 Games has no plans to release Terraria on Wii U

Sandbox adventure game Terraria will not launch on Nintendo's Wii U platform, publisher 505 Games revealed on the game's forums this week. "We do not have any plans to bring Terraria to Wii U and it is not in development. Sorry," 505 Game wrote on the forums in response to fan's question about a possible release on the platform. "While the control mechanism may be nicely translated (agreed on that end), there are other factors at play that prevent it from happening and we don't expect that to change any time soon unfortunately." 505 Games announced this week that Terraria is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this year. Terraria coming to PS4 and Xbox One this year

Sandbox adventure game Terraria is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this year, publisher 505 Games announced on the game's forums today. According the post, Terraria on PS4 will be cross-save and cross-play compatible with PlayStation Vita. The new console version will also include all content from the game's 1.2 update — which includes new recipes and items as well as a number of improvements and fixes — as well as some unspecified "brand new functionality." The PS4 version will be shown at E3 in Los Angeles next week, according to 505. PlayStation Plus to get six games a month, June 2014 includes Trine 2 and NBA 2K14

Sony is changing up the way it doles out free PlayStation Plus games, with the schedule and number of titles set to become much more regular, the company announced today. From June 2014 onward, Plus subscribers on each PlayStation platform — PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita — will receive two free games per month. Starting in July, all six of those titles will go free on the first Tuesday of the month and will be available free for one month, until the first Tuesday of the subsequent month. Terraria 1.2 update live on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS Vita April 17

Terraria's major 1.2 update hits Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita April 17, developer Re-Logic announced on the game's official Facebook page. The overhaul to the 2D sandbox, which rolled out to the Windows PC version last October, will be free to all Terraria owners. Update 1.2 for consoles includes the same features that was released to Windows PC, except with a handful of console specific differences. The hefty update introduces a slew of bug fixes, improvements, new recipes and items. Changes to the graphics, NPC, mechanics and gameplay are also included. Terraria launches for PS Vita Dec. 17

Re-Logic's action adventure sandbox game, Terraria, will be available in North America for PlayStation Vita Dec. 17, the developer recently announced via the game's forums. In Terarria, players explore an open, 2D world while searching for materials and crafting items and structures. Originally launched for Windows PC in 2011, reports suggested the game would be released for Vita in early December. According to the developer's post, the Vita version was finally approved by Sony. "PS3 players should see, if they haven't already, an update being pushed out," the post reads. "This update allows for the Cross-Play feature compatibility with the Vita." Terraria for PS Vita arriving early next month

Reports from the U.K. are suggesting that Terraria for PlayStation Vita has been given a release date of Dec. 5. A Sony ad in trade newspaper MCV, spotted by Videogamer, dated the 2D building-and-action game for release on Dec. 5, which was later confirmed by publisher 505 Games in a statement to Eurogamer. A spokesperson for 505 Games in the U.S. told Polygon that a date had not been finalized while "some moving pieces are put into place," but said that the game would be "out soon." Terraria was first launched on Windows PCs in 2011 from indie studio Re-Logic. It allows players to explore a 2D world to collect materials and craft items and structures to keep themselves safe from monsters.

Terraria updated for consoles and mobile

Re-Logic has announced updates for console and mobile versions of its 2D explore-and-craft adventure Terraria. Players of iOS and Android versions of Terraria will now be able to play against one another in local online games supporting up to four players. Mobile versions also include updates such as the ability to drop inventory items into the game world. Updates on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions have also been announced, offering more than a dozen new items and crafting recipes including new armor sets, light sources and building blocks as well as new monsters. Tricks and treats coming to Terraria with a Pumpkin Moon

Terraria's Halloween event is now live with items, weapons and more and will run until Nov. 10, creator Redigit announced via the game's forums. In addition to bug fixes, the update also adds pumpkin-themed tiles and walls; Halloween-themed pets, costumes and paintings; and costumed enemies. "Most monsters in the world will now have a chance to drop Goodie Bags that are filled with fun surprises," the post reads. "There is also now a Pumpkin Moon Event that can be triggered in hardmode that has increasingly difficult waves with better loot based on how long you last." Terraria 2 coming to multiple platforms, except the 3DS

Terraria 2, the sequel to Re-Logic's adventure sandbox game will arrive on multiple platforms around its PC launch, creator Andrew "Redigit" Spinks told Pocket Gamer, saying that it will not see a release on the Nintendo 3DS. "I am wanting to code Terraria 2 in a more portable language so it can be released on multiple platforms at launch or close to launch," Spinks told Pocket Gamer. "3DS is something I was very interested in getting Terraria on but the system unfortunately cannot run Terraria the way it needs to be ran."
