The Banner Saga review: planet caravan

Its colorful exterior hides an intense game of tactics, with combat that feeds into the rest of the game. There are numbers to crunch and stats to mull over while taking in the pretty pictures. New deal could clear game musician strife

Conflict between a musicians union, its members and games companies moved towards resolution yesterday, following a deal between the American Federation of Musicians and Microsoft. Following 18 months of negotiations, Microsoft agreed a deal with the AFM to pay a set figure of $300 for a three-hour recording session, and use the music without restriction across game platforms. But usage in other media, like TV commercials, would require extra payments. According to a report in Variety, the deal could serve as a template for other games companies and musicians, neither of whom are happy with current arrangements. A previous contract offered by the AFM had been rejected by game publishers, who argued that it was too restrictive. This impasse has affected AFM musicians' ability to work...

IGDA says King's 'predatory efforts' oppose industry's values

The International Game Developers Association believes that social games developer King's "overreaching" candy trademark application and "predatory efforts" to enforce it oppose the values of the game development community. "While we understand and respect the appropriate exercise of Trademark rights, King's overreaching filing in its application for the Trademark for its game 'Candy Crush Saga,'" a statement on the organization's website reads, "and its predatory efforts to apply that mark to each separate word contained in that name, are in opposition to the values of openness and cooperation we support industry wide, and directly contradict the statement King's CEO, Riccardo Zacconi, made on 27 January." King acquired the trademark for "candy" in the European Union with a pending...
