Game designer Ron Gilbert pondered the definition of the label "indie developer" in a post on his website today, posing numerous questions about the term apparently in an effort to point out how meaningless the phrase has become. Gilbert came to fame at Lucasfilm Games (later LucasArts) in the late 1980s and early 1990s with his work on a string of beloved adventure games, including Maniac Mansion and The Secret of Monkey Island, and the engine that powered them, SCUMM. The Experimental Gameplay Workshop — a curated showcase of some of the most exciting experimental game design in 2014 — featured works that spanned themes like sex, the use of the body in games, forced perspective and subversion of existing game rules. Puzzle-platform adventure game The Cave is now available for Ouya, developer Double Fine announced today via Twitter. The Cave stars a ragtag team of adventurers as they explore the game's sentient, titular cave. Players build a team of three from several different options, including a hillbilly, a time traveler and a scientist, and switch between characters to solve puzzles. The Cave is already available across a number of platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC via Steam. A new trailer celebrates the launch of The Cave on iOS devices today. The trailer introduces some of the game's cast of characters, as well as the puzzles and obstacles they'll face on the way to following their dreams. The Cave is currently available for iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone for $4.99. In our review of the console version, we found the game had lush production value and charm that battled with questionable mechanics and a repetitive structure.

The Cave, Ron Gilbert and Double Fine's puzzle-platforming adventure game, will launch for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Oct. 3 via the App Store, the developer announced today. Those who pick up the iOS version can play with the game's new touch controls. The Cave follows the journey of seven mismatched adventurers as they explore an anthropomorphic cave. Players head out with a team of three; each character has a distinct personality and backstory. The game will be available for $4.99. The Cave was announced for iOS this summer. Indie Speed Run — in which competing developers create a game within a 48-hour period — has announced this year's panel of judges, including Peter Molyneux, Notch, Kim Swift and Suda51. Registration for the online September event is open today. The contest carries a $25 fee per team, but the charge doesn't apply until the 48-hour game clock begins, and two random elements for use in the games are sent out to competitors. The Cave, Double Fine's modern adventure game staring a large cast of mismatched characters and an anthropomorphic cave, is headed to iOS this summer, a representative from the developer confirmed to Polygon. According to a hands-on report from TouchGen, the mobile version remaps the control scheme to focus on taps instead of a virtual stick for movement and adds swipes for jumps. Sega will bring games starring Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Hedgehog and soldiers old and new to E3 2013, according to a post on the Sega Blog. Games on the show floor will include Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, Windows PC), Relic Entertainment's Company of Heroes 2 (Windows), Sonic Lost World (Wii U, Nintendo 3DS) and The Creative Assembly's Total War: Rome 2 (Windows). Double Fine Productions' The Cave, which was released last year, will also be on-hand. E3 2013 will run June 11-13, and Polygon will be there to bring you all the news. Amazon today launched a storefront dedicated to indie games, along with a raft of promotional deals. The Indie Games Store is a new category nested in the Digital Video Games Store. It features the likes of Don't Starve, FTL and The Bridge. In an Amazon blog post, technical evangelist Peter Heinrich explained that the initiative is designed to "specifically help indie game developers with promoting their PC, Mac, and browser-based games while helping gamers discover a large and growing selection of innovative indie games." He added, "Powerhouse game studios don't hold a monopoly on inventiveness or creativity, and some of the best games of all time were created on a shoestring by two or three people with a shared vision.
