The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawnguard review: reality bites

Skyrim's "Dawnguard" expansion has a lot to live up to. Bethesda's open-world RPGs have set a precedent. The best expansions explore entirely new lands, unlike those explored in the main game. Oblivion's "The Shivering Isles" was twisted, alien; "Point Lookout" was cajun spice thrown into Fallout 3; "Old World Blues" gave Fallout: New Vegas a b-movie-inspired crater of death to rummage through. These examples represent the very best Bethesda has brought to their games, expansions which felt drastically different from their roots. "Dawnguard," unfortunately, goes another way. Bethesda Game Studios' fantasy-themed role-playing games The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and some downloadable content for each are on sale today through Xbox Live Marketplace and Games on Demand, according to a post on Major Nelson's blog. The discounts include: Skyrim through Games on Demand is now $29.99, normally $59.99. Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC is now 800 Microsoft Points, normally 1,600 MSP. Xbox Live users can purchase All Zombies Must Die, Shoot Many Robots, Joy Ride Turbo and Guardian Heroes at half price starting Nov. 6, Major Nelson revealed. The promotion, which ends come Nov. 12, will allow users to purchase these four titles at a discounted price of 400 MS Points each - a value of $5.00 per game. Fans of the Elder Scrolls series can in addition find discounts for expansions Dawnguard, Heathfire, Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, alongside full titles Oblivion and Skyrim from now until Nov. 5. 'The Last of Us,' 'Halo 4,' 'Dishonored' lead 2012 Game Critics Awards E3 nominations

Nominations for the Game Critics Awards' Best of E3 accolades were announced yesterday, with the winners to follow on June 26th. Dishonored, Halo 4, and The Last of Us each picked up four nominations, including Best of Show. Assassin's Creed III and Tomb Raider also received nods for that coveted award, and picked up a total of three nominations. The same five games made up the list of nominees for Best Console Game. Members of the games press vote on the Game Critics Awards, and for the Best of E3 list, only games that were playable at the convention are eligible.
