These portraits from Skyrim look more like magazine covers than video games

Modders have made breathtaking improvements to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, a game that was visually impressive on its own. Real tender love and care has gone into making the fantasy world and its people more believable and lifelike. These portraits artfully capture that hard work. Taken by a collection of artists across the internet, these screens capture the faces within the world of modded Skyrim. The result resembles magazine photography more than the typical marketing screen grab. This is the second exhibition of Skyrim faces put together by Andrew Cull Photography. Skywind, the mod bringing Morrowind to Skyrim, is looking for voice actors

The team behind Skywind, the fan-made mod promising to bring the world of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, is putting out the call for vocal talent to flesh out their project's audio, according to a video from lead designer and landscaper "SquallyDaBeanz." Skywind has been in development since late 2012 and is approaching a public release. Project leaders are looking for voice actors to lend their vocal talents to the project's Dark Elves, as well as four or five people to help the project's sound coordinator with quality control. These volunteers will listen to sound clips and help the project pick out which voice snippets to use. Overall, Skywind will feature 300 to 400 hours of voice acting, so the group is hoping to wrangle volunteers as soon as...

Skywind's first public alpha will launch 'soon,' say developers

Skywind, the fan-developed effort to restore The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind with the engine from The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, is nearing the first public release of its alpha, the creators said in an update video released this week. The Elder Scrolls Renewal Project, which is undertaking the update (with the blessing of Bethesda Game Studios) isn't taking any questions on when exactly the alpha will be released. "It will be revealed in time exactly what a public developer release is." Meantime, this trailer, detailing content in version 0.9.4 of Skywind, shows off some of the new landscaping, player modeling, interiors and exteriors. Skywind's last community update announced that more than two hours of original music would feature in the game, along with new voice acting and a...

Bethesda game director Todd Howard to receive Germany's LARA of Honor

Game director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios Todd Howard will receive the LARA of Honor at a joint German Computer Game Awards and The German Games Award ceremony on May 15. Howard joined Bethesda in 1994 and earned his first game development credit for producer and designer of The Terminator: Future Shock and SkyNET. He went to develop numerous titles for Bethesda, such as The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, all of which have received Game of the Year accolades. "We are delighted and proud that Todd Howard is doing us the honor of coming in person to receive the LARA of Honor on May 15," Harald Hesse, spokesman for the LARA jury, said in a prepared statement. "Without doubt, with all of his...

Metal Gear Solid, BioShock Infinite and Skyrim, now with more Gilbert Gottfried

Your favorite video games would be very different if they featured the voice of Gilbert Gottfried, and we now know just how different they would be, thanks to Game Informer. Gottfried, 59, is a comedian and actor best known for his nails-on-a-chalkboard squawk of a voice, which you may be familiar with from memorable roles such as the parrot Iago in 1992's Aladdin and the duck in Aflac commercials. (He also did voice-over work for Iago in multiple Kingdom Hearts games.) Game Informer brought Gottfried into the studio to record lines in games from the 8-bit era to the present, including the original Metal Gear Solid, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and BioShock Infinite. If there's a more exuberant "fus ro dah" cry on the internet, we haven't heard it.

Fan-made Morrowind restoration will feature two hours of original music

Skywind, the fan-made project rendering the world of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind with the engine from The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, has renamed itself the The Elder Scrolls Renewal Project, and released this second development video detailing the progress made so far. The video discusses how crafting (and the tailoring customization option) will be introduced into Skywind, as Morrowind (released in 2002) did not feature crafting. The development team also is seeking volunteers to help rewrite dialogue, and is looking for voice actors with suitable talent and equipment to record lines to make characters less robotic. Volunteer composers have also created more than two hours of original music to form Skywind's soundtrack. To see the team's first developer diary, released in January,...

Gamer proposes with a Skyrim enchanted item

A video gamer introduced to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim by his girlfriend proposed to her in the most appropriately Skyrim way possible: with a real-world representation of the item that enables marriage within the game. Sarah Briody received the "Amulet of Mara" from her fiancé. In the game, the amulet unlocks special dialogue options, including the ability to marry other characters. Briody told Kotaku that her fiancé gave her the amulet and it didn't register at first what it meant. When she put it on he said, "Is that an Amulet of Mara? I'm surprised someone like you isn't spoken for." Then he took a knee. For those wondering, he gave her an engagement ring, too. And she said yes.
