Dota 2 breaks own record for most concurrent users on Steam

Valve's real-time action game, Dota 2, broke its own record for the most concurrent users in history on Steam since its own record in March. Dota 2, which is still in beta, registered a peak of 329,977 players on Saturday. That day coincided with Dota 2's West Qualifier for The International tournament, which ran from May 13 to 19. Last March, Dota 2 registered 297,000 players, breaking The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim's record in 2011 by nearly 10,000 users. A graph depicting Dota 2's growth in comparison to Skyrim can be viewed here. Dota 2's The International tournament's East Qualifiers are underway, running from May 20 to 26, with the main tournament taking place on Aug. 7. Skyrim dev support team moves on to Bethesda's next project, no more DLC planned

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim's post-launch support team has moved on to work on Bethesda's next project, marking the end of the game's schedule of major content updates, the studio announced today. "Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project," a post on Bethesda Blog reads, "and that game is at the point where it requires the studio's full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet." The blog post added that though the support team is moving on, Bethesda will continue to provide minor updates to Skyrim "as needed." A representative for the company confirmed to Polygon that "no other DLC [is] coming," meaning Hearthfire, Dragonborn and Dawnguard will be the title's only expansions. "We look forward to sharing our next adventure with you," the...

Skyrim update 1.9 adds legendary skills and difficulty, 'removes' level cap

Update 1.9 for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has been released for consoles and adds new legendary skills that "effectively removes the overall level cap," Bethesda announced via its blog. With the updated set, players can change their skills to legendary, which resets the skill to level 15. This returns any perks and allows the skills to be affected by leveling once more. Additionally, the update adds a new legendary difficulty setting. Several bugs are also addressed by the patch, including a glitch that would cause dragon nemesis Alduin to become invincible and improper NPC respawns. You can read the full list of changes here. Update 1.9 was released for Steam users in March.

Skyrim lithographs damaged while shipping

Official Skyrim lithographs purchased from the Bethesda store were found to be damaged in transit after being shipped to the warehouse, Bethesda said in an email sent to users who purchased the item. "unfortunately," the message reads, "no one there noticed until they finally went on sale and began to be packaged up for you all. While some of them were less damaged than others, we decided that any damage at all was unacceptable and the fairest thing would be to have them all destroyed so we could start over fresh." Reprints of the lithographs are underway and will be rushed to the store's warehouse to begin shipping out to customers. Shipping is expected to begin the week of April 1. As these are numbered items, the store will designate these new prints with an asterix on the off...

Tropical mod brings climate change to Skyrim

Tropical Skyrim - A Climate Overhaul, a recently updated mod for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, replaces the often desolate expanses of Bethesda's fantasy role-playing game world with a tropical setting. Tropical Skyrim takes the rainy, snowy climate and replaces it with jungles, deserts, bamboo forests and more, according to the mod's description on Nexus Mods. The mod even swaps some of Skyrim's animals, with pandas instead of bears and apes swapped for trolls in some areas. Modder "Soolie" has also updated the textures on cities and buildings "to suit their surroundings." Check out SaioTV's video above for a 14-minute tour of the climate overhaul. If you like what you see, you can download the 876MB 1.0 version of Tropical Skyrim here.

Skyrim Steam update adds Legendary difficulty, raises level cap

An update for the Steam version of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim adds a new Legendary difficulty setting to the game, which allows players to raise their characters' levels higher than ever before, Bethesda announced today. The new difficulty setting, part of Skyrim's 1.9 update, allows players to reset their individual skills after they've reached level 100. After dropping the skills to the base level of 15, players can rank up through them again, re-unlocking the valuable perks in each tree — and, more importantly, allowing their characters to level up far beyond the game's original level cap, since players must rank up their skills a certain number of times before moving on to the next character level. The update is only in its beta phase, meaning its PC only for now, but Bethesda...

Skyrim high-res texture pack updated for expansions

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim developer Bethesda Game Studios updated the game's high-resolution texture pack today, adding improved textures for Skyrim's three downloadable expansions, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced. The texture pack is available only for the Windows PC version of Skyrim. Bethesda updated the free DLC now that the game's third expansion, Dragonborn, is available on PC (it launched yesterday). The studio initially released the texture pack for Skyrim itself in February 2012, a few months after the game's launch in November 2011. According to Bethesda, the update is approximately 1.5 GB in size; players who don't already have the texture pack installed will have to download the whole thing, which comes in at about 4.7 GB. Running the game with the texture pack...

The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim's add-ons will launch this February on PlayStation 3: Dragonborn on Feb. 12, followed by Hearthfire Feb. 19 and Dawnguard Feb. 26, publisher Bethesda Softworks announced today. Release dates in Europe are still to be determined, although Bethesda said it is "working with Sony Europe to finalize certification for other territories." Bethesda said in mid-January that the three Skyrim add-ons would finally be available on PS3 in February, months after their respective launches on Xbox Live — Dawnguard was released in June, Hearthfire in September and Dragonborn in December. Last month, Bethesda also said that Dragonborn will launch Feb. 5 on Windows PC, and that the v1.8 title update for Skyrim will be released on PS3 shortly before the launch of Dragonborn....
