If we ever cancel The Last Guardian we'll tell you, Sony's Yoshida promises

It's been seven years since work started on The Last Guardian, five years since it was announced, and who knows how many rumor posts saying that the game — begun as, and possibly still, a PlayStation 3 title — has been canceled. Most recently, that common rumor surfaced right before this year's E3. It's not just the long wait that drives these rumors, the game has run into some significant issues, including the departure of producer Fumito Ueda as a full-time employee at Sony. He does remain on the project as a consultant, but the story of the game's creation remains deeply hidden. So when I wrapped up my interview with Sony worldwide studios head Shuhei Yoshida with one more question, Yoshida knew what was coming. "It exists. The team is working hard on it," he intoned almost...

E3 rumors: The complete list

E3 kicks off bright and early tomorrow with a long and busy day of press conferences from Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Sony and Ubisoft. But before we get the official word, let's take a look at the rumors and "leaks" that have made their way onto our radar. We've compiled a list of what's rumored to make an appearance, from the far-fetched to the fairly likely. A PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita bundle: A retail listing recently popped up Amazon France's website for a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita bundle dubbed "the "Ultimate Player Edition." The retailer lists the bundle for €579.99 (about $789). The Last Guardian is still a thing: Hope still burns bright that The Last Guardian might one day see release. Following rumors that the game was canceled, Scott Rohde, product...

E3 2014: What we probably (and definitely) won't see this week

The past month or so has been rife with announcements that certain games and companies will not have a presence at E3 this year. From highly-anticipated titles announced almost eight years ago to high-level executives sitting it out to take it easy, here's what you probably won't, and definitely won't, see at E3. Absence confirmed Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3: These two Square Enix role-playing games are earning mystical unicorn status by virtue of being announced too early and then failing to appear at E3 year after year. We got some information at last year's expo, where Square announced both would come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. But earlier this week, producer Shinji Hashimoto told Famitsu that neither game would have a presence at E3 and more details on both games...

Sony reiterates The Last Guardian is not canceled

Here we go again. Sony has directly refuted another rumor that The Last Guardian, a title heavily anticipated since its announcement at E3 five years ago, had been canceled. That's not true, said Scott Rhode, PlayStation's product development head for Sony Worldwide Studios America. @notaxation @yosp and I laughed at this rumor over dinner. The Last Guardian has NOT been cancelled. — Scott Rohde (@RohdeScott) June 8, 2014 Rohde is referring to Shuhei Yoshida, who is the president of worldwide studios for Sony Computer Entertainment. The tweet responded to a report from IGN last night, which said a memo circulated at an internal Sony meeting said "The Last Guardian is cancelled." IGN attributed the detail to "an internal source speaking to IGN Russia." Last fall, Yoshida d...

The Last Guardian creator 'terribly sorry' for delay

Fumito Ueda, best known for his work on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, apologized for the ongoing and often mysterious development of The Last Guardian. The game has been stuck in development for six years, although according to Ueda, his work on the game was completed "a long time ago." Ueda told Edge he was "terribly sorry for that for various reasons I have kept my audience waiting for such a long time." "The details of when, where and how it will be completed are beyond my control," he continued. "The original staff members on Ico and SOTC are just as fussy over details as I am. I always want to create quickly, and I always want to increase the rate of production." Ueda currently works on a freelance contract for the company, something he states "was not easy." "I can't go into...

The Last Guardian is now in a 're-engineering' phase, says Yoshida The Last Guardian is in a "re-engineering" phase and is currently being worked on by a "well staffed" team at Sony, according to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida. He said the game has never been on hiatus; the team is just waiting to reintroduce the title "in an appropriate way." CD Projekt, Dark Horse Comics collaborating on fantasy project Witcher developer CD Projekt Red and publisher Dark Horse Comics announced a collaboration on "something truly special for fans of the fantasy genre." The companies released a teaser trailer with the following cryptic message: "There's a mystery near the edge of the Black Forest. We'd like to invite you to fear it with us." The full reveal will come during a panel...

The Last Guardian is now in a 're-engineering' phase, says Yoshida

Despite ongoing comments suggesting development of The Last Guardian is on hiatus, the title is currently being re-engineered by a "well-staffed" team at Sony, company head Shuhei Yoshida told during this year's TGS. While Yoshida offered no hints regarding what in the long-silent development was specifically being re-engineered, he states Sony is waiting to re-introduce the game "in an appropriate way," said Yoshida. "So, we're waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way," he said. "I can't... Well, the game is in development, and it's well staffed, and [Fumito] Ueda-san is here, working - even though he's not a Sony employee, he's dedicated to the product. But we're not ready to update yet." Yoshida once again states the game...

Nintendo, Dark Souls, Titanfall, PS4, The Walking Dead, E3: Speed Run

Nintendo took its turn dousing gamers in E3 announcements. Sony America CEO Jack Tretton said PlayStation 4 won't have any DRM restrictions for Sony's first-party games, but third-party publishers will be able to set up their own DRM policies for the console, similar to the current policy for PS3. The Last Guardian 'on hiatus,' Tretton says (update: Yoshida says it's in 'active development')

Team Ico's long overdue next title, The Last Guardian, is on hiatus but hasn't "gone away," Sony Computer Entertainment of America CEO Jack Tretton said today in an interview with GameTrailers. Asked about the game that was originally due out in 2011, Tretton said that it's one of many projects circulating at Sony's global network of studios. "I think the cool thing about our worldwide development studios is we have so many projects out there from so many great teams," he said. "Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it's on hiatus right now." Team Ico, a division of Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio, is also the developer of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The developer revealed The Last Guardian at TGS in 2009, when it was...
