The Simpsons: Tapped Out, a mobile game from Electronic Arts, features a new character not yet seen in the long-running TV show, according to the game's official Facebook page. Tapped Out's newest character is named Chester Dupree, and he appeared with the game's level 41 update. Chester is the brother-in-law of Springfield's most well-known doctor, Julius Hibbert, and has only been mentioned by name in The Simpsons. In the game, he's considered an unemployed slacker. On the game's app page, the Level 41 update features a special highlight on Dr. Hibbert and his family. Plans to develop a role-playing game based on long-running TV series The Simpsons was in discussions at one stage, series writer and executive producer Al Jean said in an interview with Gold Derby. "We've talked about it and it's a really complicated thing to do, especially because you have to write a number of possibilities for each current [character]," Jean said when it was pointed out that a game based on The Simpsons could translate well as an RPG. Electronic Arts reported financial results today for the fiscal quarter ending June 30, 2013, showing an increase in digital net revenue and a decrease in packaged goods compared to the same quarter last year. GAAP digital net revenue was $482 million, compared to $342 million in Q1 2013, while revenue for publishing packaged goods and other net revenue was $452 million, down from $592 million in Q1 2013. Total net revenue was $949 million, compared to $955 million in Q1 2013. EA singled out several games that performed well during the quarter, including The Simpsons: Tapped Out, which recorded its highest revenue in a quarter since its launch last year. 20 years after its TV debut, a Whacking Day episode-themed update is now available for The Simpsons: Tapped Out for iOS and Android until May 2. The update features a new mini-game where players can earn currency and prizes by whacking snakes with a baton and two new quests: defeat the Serpent Menace and save the snakes from Whacking Day. New episode-significant structures include Fort Sensible, Lugash's Gym, Duff Stadium and the Springfield Coliseum. Electronic Arts plans to have 16 titles available for the Samsung Galaxy S4 when it launches this April, according to a press release from the company. Games include The Simpsons: Tapped Out, Real Racing 3, The Sims FreePlay, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Monopoly, Plants vs. Zombies, the recently announced Tetris Blitz and Bejeweled Blitz. Publisher Electronic Arts sold more than 12 million copies of its soccer sim FIFA 13 during the holiday quarter, a 23 percent increase in sales of the franchise from the previous year, the company announced today. Sales of the latest FIFA game and more than $100 million in digital revenue from the title helped contribute to quarterly earnings at the "high end of our guidance range," according to EA CEO John Riccitiello. For the company's current fiscal year, EA says it has generated more than $230 million in digital revenue from its FIFA titles, including EA Sports FIFA Online 2 and FIFA World Class Soccer. The Simpsons: Tapped Out's Winter Update is the subject of a trailer released today that showcases the game's free Christmas-themed additions. Released earlier this month, the Winter Update brings new characters like Barney and Sideshow Mel, new buildings, Christmas lights and more to Electronic Arts' free-to-play iOS title, according to the game's listing on iTunes. After celebrating Halloween last month with a Halloween-themed Treehouse of Horror update, The Simpsons: Tapped Out for iOS is now getting a Thanksgiving theme. Players can use the in-game currency of donuts or cash to purchase parade balloons. So far five balloons have been confirmed: Snowball 2, Santa's Little Helper, Itchy, Blinky and Scratchy. According to users on the game's official forums the balloons are only cosmetic. With the latest updates also comes new decorations like a "Hail Ants" sign, a volleyball court and graffitied walls. The update goes live on Nov. 8.
