Maxis on finding the right tone for a futuristic Sims 3 expansion

The Sims 3's latest expansion pack, Into the Future, seems like a simple concept: Take the long-running Sims franchise and set it in a futuristic world. But according to developer EA Maxis, the studio had to carefully construct that world because of all the existing history of the series. "We had to appeal to everybody without alienating anybody," said Justin Thomas (above right), art director on The Sims 3: Into the Future, during a panel at New York Comic Con yesterday evening. According to Thomas, designing the art of Into the Future was a complex process with significant constraints and other considerations. The Sims 3 was originally released in June 2009, and Into the Future will be its eleventh expansion pack since then. That means that Maxis is stuck with the technology it has;...

The Sims 3: Into the Future trailer tantalisingly retro-futuristic, arriving in October

A producer walkthrough from EA highlights the retro-futuristic features in The Sims 3: Into the Future expansion, which is slated for release Oct. 24 on Windows PC and Mac for $39.99. Set in Oasis Landing, The Sims 3: Into The Future expansion pack gives Sims access to future technology through the Advanced Technology Skill. Players will be to customize programmable Plumbots, which can hold up to seven trait chips. Players will be free to switch between present and future times, allowing them to experiment with how actions of Sims in the present can have effects on descendants. Futuristic items for homes include holographic TVs, easels, plants, computers, as well as tube elevators, automatic-sliding doors, rooftop gardens, and glass floors and walls. Those who pre-order The Sims 3:...

The Sims 3: Island Paradise gives Sims more freedom to move with multiple properties and floating homes

The tenth expansion pack for The Sims 3, Island Paradise, will allow players more freedom, giving them the ability to "move between worlds" and build on multiple private properties within them, producer Graham Nardone told Polygon. Island Paradise is a thematic expansion centered on providing Sims with vacation spots and a bit of aquatic adventure. The pack includes a handful of new features, including the ability to drive and lounge on boats, scuba dive and explore the ocean floor for fauna, fish and forgotten treasure. Houseboats have also been added in Island Paradise, allowing players to take their home on the road — or rather, the waves. Houseboats can be used to float just about any kind of structure — including restaurants, bars and other establishments — and are not exclusive...

Sims 3: Island Paradise trailer is an almost-epic story of houseboats and shark attacks

A trailer out from EA highlights The Sims 3 producer Graham Nardone's group of Sims and their island adventures in the Island Paradise expansion pack. After building a houseboat that looks abysmally unseaworthy, Nardone must staff it with a crew of Sims before it can sail the waters of Isla Paradiso. Local twins Claire and Jacques head aboard to snorkel and explore, the nerdy Liam O'Dourke becomes captain, the seasick Olivia longs for a land-bound resort and old salt Elmo takes care of the ship's upkeep. After a shark attack during a scuba dive results in one twin dead and the other discovering a new and uncharted island, the Sims use the island to found and operate a new resort. In Island Paradise, players who opt to develop a resort take on the role of business owners instead of...

The Sims 3: Island Paradise trailer shows resort-running and scuba-diving

EA has released a new trailer for its Island Paradise expansion pack for The Sims 3 showing the many ways in which players' Sims can live life on the beach. Sims can opt to build literal house boats to captain and drive around the seas to explore uncharted islands, and more commercially-minded Sims can stay on land to build and operate resorts. The second of three 2013 expansion packs announced earlier this year by Maxis, The Sims 3: Island Paradise will be released for Mac and Windows PC on June 25.

The Sims 3: University Life launch trailer showcases on-campus shenanigans

The latest trailer for EA's University Life expansion to The Sims 3 shows off just why many consider college the highlight of one's life, even the life of a Sim. Students at Sims University are blank slates free to reinvent themselves as they please to fit into whatever social group they wish. They can go to class, skip class to play beer pong at the local bar, or dumpster dive for food, and share all of that via their in-game smartphones. University Life gives players the options to earn street cred with one of three groups— nerds, jocks and rebels — as they advance the collegiate career, or lack thereof, of their Sim character. An in-game social network allows Sims to share photos, videos and texts with their fellow classmates, and achieving good grades will give one's Sim a leg up...
