The Wolf Among Us Episode 3: A Crooked Mile review: procedural justice

At the beginning of A Crooked Mile, we find Bigby in a pretty dark place. Literally. In a seedy, blood-spattered hotel room the Big Bad Wolf as just uncovered the big bad secret that may just turn Fabletown on its ear. With the discovery of some … unsavory photographs, Crane has just been revealed as Snow's number one fan and the lead suspect for the murderer stalking Fabletown. What follows is perhaps the most focused episode of Wolf Among Us yet: Bigby must find Crane. But that also makes it the most procedural. There are moments of reflection, but this is the middle of a detective story, and A Crooked Mile feels a little like an episode of Law and Order (or at least the Law part) as a result. On his way to warn Snow, Bigby stumbles into the funeral for Lily, one of the killer's...

Sev Zero headed to Fire TV from Amazon Game Studios

Sev Zero, Amazon Game Studios' hybrid tower defense/third-person shooter with a multiplayer component for Amazon tablets, is available for the Fire TV, Amazon's new set-top box that supports gaming. The game, which was "built from the ground up for Fire TV" according to Amazon, is available in the Amazon Appstore for $6.99. The story takes place in the early 22nd century, after Earth is threatened by an alien species called the Ne’ahtu, who've disabled the planet's defense grid with a computer virus. Dr. Amy Ramanujan, a "computer prodigy," disabled the virus and leads the charge to protect Earth when the Ne'athu return. In Sev Zero's 15 levels, players are on a mission to join Dr. Ramanujan and defend the planet. They switch between "tower defense mode" to build towers that launch...

Firewatch developer: suspend disbelief by 'going on a date with the player'

Vanaman began his talk by asserting that narrative and gameplay need not — and in many cases, shouldn't be — be so alienated from one another. "I reject the notion that the player should have to ignore certain parts of the experience to find value in the narrative or connect to the story," he said. He and the other developers at Campo Santo — who are in the process of developing Firewatch, a first-person adventure — have a metaphor they like to use for creating interactive stories. They liken it to going on a date with the player. "The player is at the table with you, and for the date to go really well, you have to listen to what that person is saying, or what that person is expressing," he said. "And then respond in a mix of comfortably predictable and excitingly surprising ways,"...

Telltale describes the difficulty of starting over in The Walking Dead Season Two

Creating the second season of The Walking Dead was a difficult proposition, largely because of the high body count of the first. [Spoiler alert: If that first sentence wasn't a clear enough indicator, the following article discusses the events of the first season of The Walking Dead game, as well as the first episode of Season Two. Reader beware!] In a SXSW Gaming 2014 panel titled "Telltale Games on the Future of Entertainment," Telltale's Harrison Pink, Kevin Bruner and Job Stauffer described the challenges that came with creating the second season's cast of new characters. Most of the cast from the first season are either missing, dead or have otherwise departed from the series' core cast. For the most part, Clementine, the character you were tasked with protecting in the first...

2014's most innovative games by the people making them

Polygon contacted about 30 developers and publishers making highly promising games and asked them, what makes your game so special? Why should gamers be excited about your new game? These games represent just a slice of the many great titles on offer this year and, judging by the responses we received, developers are finding different ways to use technology and design ideas to progress their particular genres. The themes of 2014 are about going back to core genres, finding out what makes them really work, and then looking further afield to bring in ideas and mechanics that can bring some unique quality to the games. Shooters become more like RPGs, which become more like MMOs; puzzle games become more narrative and narrative games become more action-orientated. NEW NAMES Console...

Forcing players to wait is one of the best weapons of Telltale's episodic games

If you want to change the difficulty to easy, don’t listen to the people who say you’re not a real gamer. If you want to use a cheat code and just have fun, go for it. Life is too short to worry about being judged based on how you take part in this hobby we share. That said, there are people who wait until the season of each Telltale adventure game is finished and gorge on the whole thing, running across cliffhangers like stones skipping on a lake. This approach is appealing for a number of reasons, and many of us have been almost trained to wait for the trades of our favorite comic books or the full-season availability of our favorite shows before jumping in, but there is something lost in this approach when playing episodic games. The power of choice The ability for players to...
