The Wolf Among Us will include an 'evolution of choice' born from The Walking Dead, dev says

The Wolf Among Us, Telltale Games' upcoming adventure game set in Vertigo Comics' Fables universe, will include an "evolution" of the choice mechanics in The Walking Dead, Telltale president and co-founder Kevin Bruner told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Bruner said that the game presents a challenge, in part because the characters and their backstories were established first in comics. That differs from Lee and Clementine in The Walking Dead, in-house creations who could be tailored to fit the story. "But we really have embraced it," Bruner told RPS. "We've come up with new storytelling techniques. We call it the evolution of choice. A big thing in Walking Dead was going where the story took you, and we would throw these choices at you, but you couldn't really determine what was going to...

Telltale on why players chose the tough girl instead of the nerdy guy in The Walking Dead

[SPOILER WARNING: This GDC 2013 talk discussed several major plot elements from The Walking Dead. If you have not finished the game and don't want anything revealed, please do not read further.] According to Vanaman and Rodkin, Telltale set out with a specific question in mind with The Walking Dead: "What does a person do with the time that they have?" Rather than use traditional gameplay, such as shooting, this question was better served with a time-sensitive decision-making system. But they also made sure that system would provide no qualitative feedback on choices that players made, so players had to think about and live with the decisions on their own. "The game players played in their heads was more dynamic than anything we could have come up with," said Vanaman. "In most games,...

Paid apps aren't dead in the era of free-to-play, Capy co-founder says at GDC

Reports of the death of paid apps have been greatly exaggerated, co-founder and president of Capybara Games Nathan Vella said in a talk at GDC 2013. The Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP developer acknowledges that 2013 will likely be crowned "the era of free-to-play." As proof, he offered charts showing that 66 percent of apps published in 2012 were free-to-play. That's the inverse of the market as it was in 2010. According to Vella, the free-to-play model is in ascension because of the pricing model's recent success stories. Developers follow trends, he said. In 2010, many chased Angry Birds. Today, developers are chasing successful free-to-play hits like Clash of Clans because they see in-app purchase pricing models as the "next cash cow." But acknowledging the success of...

Telltale's The Walking Dead coming to PlayStation Vita later this year

Telltale Games' The Walking Dead is coming to the PlayStation Vita later this year, IGN reports. PlayStation's director or product planning and platform software innovation, Don Mesa told IGN that the first season of Telltale's award-winning episodic game is making its way to the Sony handheld, which "sends a strong message" about the unique experiences the Vita can offer. "A good example is with The Walking Dead," he said. "We think that the emotion and the immersive experiences you're going to get there, wherever you're sitting, if you're in your living room and playing on your Vita or sitting in a café ... you get that shock or fright. I think that's going to be important. That's what we want to deliver as you're playing." A release period was not announced.
