Toki Tori dev Two Tribes closes but plans to 'reboot'

Two Tribes, the Dutch studio behind the Toki Tori games, was forced to shut down its existing development house but has formed a new internal studio for its next game, the company's founders announced today. The company existed in two parts: Two Tribes, which was the development studio, and its parent company, Two Tribes Publishing. The latter entity, which owns and publishes all the company's games, still exists; the company expects that "nothing much will change" outwardly. But due to the protracted development of Toki Tori 2 and its commercial failure, Two Tribes Publishing had to close Two Tribes and lay off its eight employees, leaving only its two co-founders left. "Late October last year we had no other option. When Toki Tori 2 ended up taking way longer than expected and not...

Toki Tori 2 Wii U level editor ditched after poor sales

Developer Two Tribes no longer has plans to bring its expansion of Toki Tori 2 to Wii U systems following poor sales. As a result, the studio will be abandoning earlier plans to release a Wii U level editor, a fact that one studio representative states is due to poor sales. "We asked ourselves: is this big update really worth the additional investment?," reads the statement, "We also figured that if we release a level editor, it won't do much extra to the sales. When we weighed all the options, we unfortunately decided that it was the best option to move on and focus on a new game." Despite this, the studio still attempted to find alternative solutions to the problem by speaking to both Valve and Nintendo about the possibility of integrating Steam onto the Wii U; However, this proved...

Toki Tori 2+ sees slight delay, now launching July 11 on Steam

Toki Tori 2+, the Windows PC port of Two Tribes' Wii U puzzle platformer Toki Tori 2, will be released July 11 on Steam — shortly after the previously announced date of July 2, the studio said today. The game will be available in North America for $14.99, in Europe for €14.99 and in the U.K. for £12.99. Toki Tori 2+ supports Steam Play, so buyers will get both PC and Mac copies with a single purchase. Two Tribes isn't taking pre-orders. But the studio will offer a loyalty discount to customers who own at least one previous title from its Steam library, as well as a launch-day discount for everyone. According to Two Tribes, the later date made more sense from a scheduling perspective; the studio plans to use the additional time for extra play testing and bug fixing. Toki Tori 2+ will...

Toki Tori 2 coming to Wii U on April 4

Platform puzzle game Toki Tori 2 will be available through the Wii U eShop on April 4, developer Two Tribes announced today. In a post on the company's official website, Two Tribes wrote that due to a crash bug found in post-production the game had to be resubmitted to Nintendo, extending the title's delay. The developer also wanted to prevent the game's release being lost in news coming out of the 2013 Game Developers Conference next week. "During GDC, all eyes are on that event and the news coming out of it, so we decided to do it the week after," reads the post. "You may have noticed a lot is riding for us on the success of Toki Tori 2, so we hope you do not mind waiting two more weeks!" Toki Tori 2 Wii U playable entirely on GamePad, includes Pokemon Snap-esque Tokidex feature

Puzzle platformer Toki Tori 2 for Wii U is entirely playable on the GamePad and includes new features such as the Tokidex, according to a post from Niels Hooft on the Two Tribes blog. Unlike other Wii U games, Hooft wrote, Toki Tori 2 does not mirror either screen. It's played either on a TV or the GamePad, with the option to switch between them with the Select button or menu. The setup will allow players to display extra information on the GamePad screen, such as the current scene or discovered songs. The game's new Tokidex feature acts as an in-game camera a la Pokémon Snap. Players can scan areas and take photos of almost 40 different items and creatures. Those who find everything will be awarded with a special prize. Toki Tori 2 was delayed from its original December 2012 launch...
