Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar is 'less binary and simplistic' than Ultima 4

BioWare Mythic's Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar will feature all the quests, towns and even non-playable characters from Ultima 4, but the game will be less binary and simplistic, according to creative director Paul Barnett. In a demo of the game, Barnett said Ultima Forever contains everything players would expect from an Ultima 4 remake, such as quests, answering people's quandaries, proving yourself to towns and mastering mantras. But the studio has made the game for "the modern world," which means it includes features like multiplayer, an in-depth BioWare story, high fidelity graphics and weather. The game's design is also less simplistic. "In the original Ultima 4, you would have to find these rooms, and the way you found them was you stood in one of eight spaces, and you...

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar hits iOS soon, Android version in the works

Free-to-play. Spiritual successor. Homage. These are not the sorts of things I like to hear bandied about when someone is showing off a new Ultima game. But that's exactly what Ultima Forever: Quest of the Avatar is: A free-to-play spiritual successor to Ultima 4 that is mean to be an homage to the beloved role-playing game franchise. In the game, set to be released "soon" for free on iOS, players drop into a Britannia 21 years after the events of Ultima 4 and are sent on a mission by Lady British, daughter of the now-retired Lord British. (The game features Lady and not Lord most likely because franchise creator Richard Garriot retains the trademarks to the Lord British character.) The land is under attack by the Black Weep plague and Lady Britannia needs your help. While the game...

BioWare Mythic undergoes name change, reverts back to Mythic

BioWare Mythic is now known as simply Mythic, after undergoing a name change this week, the company announced on its official Warhammer Online website. "In the wake of a new focus our studio has recently changed its name from BioWare Mythic to Mythic," reads a statement from the developer. "Everything else stays the same - our passionate teams will continue to support and develop our existing titles as well as working on some new and exciting projects." Mythic's history of name changes stems back to 2006 when the company was purchased by EA. After adopting the name EA Mythic for two years, the studio reverted back to its original name in 2008, Mythic Entertainment. The following year it was announced Mythic and BioWare would combine forces as part of an RPG/MMORPG division helmed by...

Ultima Forever will be 'very respectful of the original' says BioWare

BioWare is taking the classic role-playing game series Ultima in a new direction. Announced last week, Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar will be a free-to-play, cross-platform adventure for the iPad and PC. That may sound like an unwelcome revival of the franchise for Ultima fans who remember the influential RPG series fondly and hope for something grander than typical free-to-play fare. BioWare Mythic says it's well aware of Ultima's storied history and hopes to deliver a "respectful" sequel to Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. "We're very respectful of the original work," Ultima Forever lead designer Kate Flack told Polygon at Comic-Con. "It shaped our industry and it shaped RPGs. It's people's memories. It's important that people who played the original games don't feel like we're...
