Epic Games has released a patch for Unreal Tournament 3 that sends players to new servers, completing the series transition from GameSpy, which shut down completely yesterday. The patch, available here, also works with the Steam version of Unreal Tournament 3, Epic said. Instructions for implementing it are at the link. Users will have to recreate their old usernames on the new master server. GameSpy, which began in 1997, was purchased by Glu Mobile, a publisher of free-to-play mobile games, in August 2012. Glu announced last month that it would close down the service. Its technology had been used by more than 1,000 games, with the Unreal series among some of the longest-tenured games using it.

Epic Games released the original Unreal 15 years ago this week, and the studio is marking the first-person shooter franchise's anniversary by cutting the price of a bundle of five Unreal games on Steam. The Unreal Deal Pack includes the following updated versions and re-releases of five games: Unreal (1998), Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition (1999), Unreal 2: The Awakening (2003), Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition (2004) and Unreal Tournament 3 Black (2007, screenshot above). All five games are available only on Windows PC. The collection regularly costs $39.99, but is on sale for $10 from today through May 27. That price represents a savings of $59.95 over buying the games separately.

In an update posted to the product's Kickstarter page, the Oculus Rift's developers listed a variety of factors that forced them to push back the headset's release. "We were blown away by the overwhelming response" to the Kickstarter drive, they said, explaining that they initially "hoped to sell a few hundred kits" and instead finished the campaign with nearly $2.5 million in contributions — almost 10 times their goal — from over 9,500 backers. The campaign ended on Sept. 1, and building more than 7,500 kits between then and December proved impossible, especially since the developers did not originally...
