Inspired by Dark Souls' combat, cyber-woman is star of Blood Alloy

New on Kickstarter is Blood Alloy, a 2D Metroidvania shooter with a deeply '80s dystopia vibe. Currently being developed for Windows PC, Mac, and Ouya, its creator, Boston-based Suppressive Fire Games, says the game is inspired by "the combat mechanics of Dark Souls, as applied to gunplay, and the dynamic speed of Vanquish." Blood Alloy features a female protagonist who has been wholly cyber-cized by mysterious enemies. Leaping, firing, blocking and jet-packs ensue. According to its Kickstarter page, the game will feature "non-linear exploration with optional pathways, hub areas, shortcut creation and discovery, and tons of secrets." Suppressive Fire Games is seeking $50,000.

Vanquish coming to PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection

Vanquish, Platinum Games' 2010 third-person shooter, will join the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection this week, Sony announced today. It will be available for non-Plus members to buy for $19.99. The free games won't end there for Plus subscribers. They'll be able to download Mega Man Maverick Hunter X, a PlayStation Portable "enhanced remake" of the Super NES game Mega Man X, while the game will be sold for $9.99 to people who don't have a Plus membership. Plus members can also pick up a free Starter Pack for Dust 514, CCP Games' free-to-play MMO tie-in to Eve Online; it will sell for $9.99 otherwise. And they'll be able to buy Tate Interactive's Urban Trial Freestyle, which launches Feb. 19 on PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, on sale. The PS3...

Platinum Games aims for a 'Western' relationship between developer and publisher, Minami says

Bayonetta and Vanquish developer Platinum Games aspires to have what it describes as a "Western" relationship between the studio and its publishers, studio president and CEO Tatsuya Minami said in the latest Iwata Asks Q&A. Speaking to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, Minami said that Platinum Games has a distinctive philosophy, which is that of being uncompromising. For this reason, it aims for what it calls a "Western" relationship between studio and publisher. "The people at development studios in Europe and America are being funded by publishers but won't do everything they're told," Minami said. "We want to preserve that even relationship while making the games we want. If we fail, the company will break up, and if it goes well, we'll be like, 'Take that!' "I think that kind of...

320 GB PlayStation 3 with one year of PlayStation Plus discounted to $249.99 on Amazon

Sony's current-generation console is springing out of Amazon's Gold Box of daily deals today, with a $50 price cut to $249.99 on the 320 GB PlayStation 3 "slim" — the first redesign, not the top-loading 2012 model — that's bundled with a one-year subscription to PlayStation Plus. That membership allows Sony to market the console as being bundled with digital versions of LittleBigPlanet 2, Infamous 2 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, since those full games are part of the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection. For December, Sony added Batman: Arkham City, Limbo and Vanquish to the service. A PlayStation Plus membership also offers subscribers greater discounts in the PlayStation Store, both when Sony is and isn't running sales.

Batman: Arkham City and Limbo added to Europe's PlayStation Plus Instant Game collection

European PlayStation Plus members will receive six new titles in the Sony Instant Game Collection starting Dec. 5, PlayStation Store and Plus content manager Chris Howe announced on PlayStation Blog Europe. Beginning the first week of December, Batman: Arkham City, Vanquish and Limbo will be added to the service's Instant Game Collection, allowing PlayStation Plus members to download the titles at no extra cost. On Dec. 12, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita title Big Sky Infinity will be added, following by Mortal Kombat for PS Vita on Dec. 19 and Knytt Underground for both PS3 and PS Vita on Dec. 21. Unfortunately this also means a few titles will be knocked off of the list of Instant games. Crysis 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Double Dragon Neon will no longer be available...

Vanquish slides onto PlayStation Store Nov. 6

Vanquish, Platinum Games' 2010 frantic third-person shooter, is making its long overdue PS3 PlayStation Store debut Nov. 6, this week's installment of the PlayStation Blogcast revealed. Vanquish was well-received by critics when it launched over two years ago, adding a blend of sliding, boosting and other locomotive mechanics to solid gunplay. It will arrive on the Store alongside the rest of the games which will be added with next week's PSN update; a roster which also includes the PlayStation Move-centric patch and downloadable content for Portal 2. No price for the downloadable version of Vanquished was announced, but it currently retails for $19.99 on Amazon and on Xbox Live Marketplace.

'Bayonetta' on PlayStation 3 was Platinum Games' 'biggest failure' according to director

Director of Platinum Games Atsushi Inaba considers the PlayStation 3 version of hack-and-slash action title Bayonetta the developer's "biggest failure," reports Edge in a ten-page feature from its latest issue. In an interview excerpted on Edge's website, Inaba stated that handing the PS3 port over to the studio's in-house team at publisher Sega was a mistake, resulting in framerate and control issues that ruined players' experience of the game. "At the time we didn't really know how to develop on PS3 all that well, and whether we could have done it... is irrelevant," Inaba told Edge. "We made the decision that we couldn't. But looking back on the result, and especially what ended up being released to users, I regard that as our biggest failure. "One thing I will say is that it...

'Bayonetta' and 'Vanquish' developer Platinum Games wants to take its action games to PC

Platinum Games, the developer behind console action games Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and upcoming Wii U game The Wonderful 101, may move beyond dedicated console development to bring its games to the PC, says executive director Atsushi Inaba. Inaba told Polygon at Tokyo Game Show that making games for PC and releasing them through Valve's Steam service — and funding its own projects through Kickstarter — is something the developer is "very interested in." Platinum does not currently have any PC games in development, Inaba explained, adding that the decision on which platforms the company's games are released is primarily up to their publishers. "We haven't released anything on Steam yet, or any PC games for that matter, so I'm not in a position to encourage other...

'Super Retro Squad' reinvents classic platformers from the pixels up

Super Mario Crossover developer Exploding Rabbit has taken on the lofty goal of reinventing Mario, Zelda, Metroid and other classic NES-era franchises with its next project, Super Retro Squad. Super Retro Squad was revealed last week with a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 to bankroll the game's development — a task its already completed twice over. It shares a stylistic vein with Crossover - a 2010 Flash game programmed entirely by Jay Pavlina, which tosses Link, Mega Man, Samus and other Nintendo characters into the Mushroom Kingdom trappings of Super Mario Bros.. Unlike Crossover, however, Super Retro Squad will star a cast of original 8-bit heroes, each of which was clearly inspired by an old-school platformer. The Mega Man-like Mecha Boy, Belmont-esque Ramona and other...
