Wildman developer explains the difficulties of RTS design on a crowdfunded budget

Gas Powered Games founder Chris Taylor tackles fan questions relating to the studio's currently in-development Wildman RPG, offering an explanation as to why the studio didn't attempt to create a pure real-time strategy game to appeal to its fanbase who enjoyed the likes of Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation. According to Taylor, it comes down to an issue of money. The cost of creating a legitimate and large-scale RTS is far higher than what is needed to fund the action RPG Wildman, while the crowdfunding model the team adopted fits the development of RPGs more comfortably, he says. "Wildman is a different game in that we can actually start at one part of the game and start building it over time, and it just fits the development model of working with the community, crowdfunding,...

Roam throws you into a base-building zombie wasteland on PC and Mac

Former Gas Powered Games developer Ryan Sharr is teaming up with colleague Zach Barson to develop a new zombie-centric base-building title, Roam, which they hope to fund through a $40,000 Kickstarter campaign. The isometric strategy title throws the player into a zombie-filled wasteland where they must scavenge for supplies to build up a base and defend themselves from continued waves of undead hordes. Every stage of the game is procedurally-generated, increasing in difficulty over time. NPCs will react to choices the player makes throughout, while zombies can mutate and increase in strength. Bandits are another danger, as they can raid the player's supplies. The game also offers RPG-like elements, allowing the player to recruit or dismiss NPCs for their base and customize gear and...

Wildman developer demonstrates new mod tool and platform Project Mercury

Gas Powered Games' Chris Taylor gives a demonstration of the studio's mod tool and web platform, Project Mercury, in the latest Kickstarter update for the struggling Wildman action RPG. The development suite, which Taylor refers to as an "infinite desktop," is "like having a warehouse that's infinitely big. You never put anything away," he says. "You can manage space. It's all just always there." Taylor goes on to describe that its user can leave the desktop at the office, then log in to access his desktop remotely from home as the system is 100 percent persistent. Project Mercury is also compatible with dual monitors. "This is not something that we can take too much credit for," Taylor goes on to say. "This is the power of HTML5." Taylor also demonstrates in depth how users can mod...

Dungeon Siege developers post first update for Wildman Kickstarter campaign

The developers behind Dungeon Siege and Supreme Commander released their first update video for Wildman today, an action role-playing strategy PC game that they hope to Kickstart through the crowd-funding platform. In the three minute video, developer Chris Taylor answers questions from backers and shows the first gameplay footage. The footage shows the Wildman with a club-like bone running around and fighting in a war zone while Taylor provides commentary on how far the game is into development. "The number of characters that are fighting here is nothing compared to what we're gonna have," Taylor says as the Wildman fends off tens of enemies. "This thing is going to go crazy. When we talk about bringing over-the-top RTS action into a game, we mean it. So this is going to get crazier...
