Carbine Studios revealed two new character paths today for its massively-multiplayer role-playing game, WildStar: the scientist and the settler.
At a recent hands-on event, Carbine showed off the two paths in action: the scientist path is for players who are more interested in the game's story and the world's lore, while the settler path is more skewed toward those who are interested in building things, crafting objects and taming hostiles.
"What settlers do is they do things to improve the areas they're in," executive producer Jeremy Gaffney told Polygon. "They take chaos and make order out of it. So in this particular case, we give you some things to do around town, so if you see something that's broken, you can fix it and get a little reputation."
Gaffney said settlers can also...
WildStar, Carbine Studios' upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game, began its first closed beta today, according to an email from publisher NCSoft.
The beta will last for "several weeks," during which time players will be able to check out WildStar's factions, races and classes. The developer hopes to add "thousands of players" during the closed beta, and those interested in checking out the science fiction-inspired MMO can sign up at the game's official website.
WildStar is slated to be released later this year for Windows PC. For more on the game, you can watch a pair of videos released earlier this year that introduce the Dominion faction and the Stalker class as well as a gallery of screenshots released alongside three more introductory videos.
Carbine Studios unveiled today the latest faction and class in the developer's upcoming MMO Wildstar, offering details on the Dominion race and Stalker stealth class in a post on the official Wildstar blog.
The Dominion faction is described as an interstellar empire fueled by military strength, religious fervor and advanced technology. This faction is broken into three races, Cassian, Mechari and Draken. Cassian are said to be the humans of planet Cassus who experienced a rapid growth in technological advancement two thousand years prior to the events of the game. The Mechari were engineered by the Eldan, an ancient race, are are described as efficient killing machines. The Draken are the warriors of this faction, whose aims are to simply eviscerate those in their way.
Carbine Studios, the developer behind upcoming MMO Wildstar, have mapped out their New Years resolutions in bullet point form on the game's official blog.
Over the course of 2013, the developer plans to focus on fan feedback using various methods. While the game's official website will be the "central repository" for the Wildstar community, Carbine will pay close attention to Facebook, Reddit, gaming forums, and guild websites to engage with and respond to fans. The studio also promises to set up livestreams to create player-integrated design meetings, while users who offered worthy suggestions on the site's forum may get a phone call from the developers asking them to discuss their design concepts in further detail.

Sound designers use noises that often have nothing to do with the on-screen action — "it doesn't matter what you're hearing, it matters what you're seeing," said WildStar senior sound designer Greg Meader in a developer blog yesterday.
Meader previously worked as an Imagineer at Disney, where he handled sound design for Disney World rides and attractions such as Tower of Terror. He explained that he frequently records ambient noises, such as insects in the night air on a trip to China, in case he can find a use for them later on.
Sound design, whether for theme parks, movies or video games, is a painstaking process in which the designer often chooses unrelated noises and experiments with them in order to create the desired sound — think of the theater standby of using a metal...
