World of Tanks Frontiers update to introduce Historical Battles April 17

World of Tanks will receive a Historical Battles game mode and updated visuals with the game's Frontiers patch on April 17, Wargaming announced today. According to Wargaming, the update is the beginning of the "transformation" for World of Tanks this year. In Historical Battle mode, players engage in "legendary tank encounters" from World War II. Tanks have been historically outfitted for three battles: Operation Spring Awakening, the Battle of Kursk and the Ardennes Breakthrough. Frontiers also introduces high definition remakes of the American M4 Sherman, Soviet T-54 and German Tiger I — the first of 10 planned remakes. "New physics functions including blow-off turrets upon explosion of the ammo rack, and realistic suspension behavior in the HD models, create a more realistic...

World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition 1.1 update adds crews and more

The latest addition to World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition, the 1.1 update, gives players access to new vehicles, maps and the game's crew options. Crews must be assigned every time players purchase a new tank. Each crew has different skills; players can choose whichever crew they desire, though the game's "best option" will be highlighted for easy selection. When a crew is reassigned to a tank or class, it must be retrained through schooling or battlefield experience. Crews can only be assigned to tanks from their own country. For more on crews, check out the tutorial video above. "Crews are essential to success in World of Tanks," the video's narrator said. "Every tank needs a crew to operate it, or it will not be able to roll out to battle." Update 1.1 also adds five new U.K.-themed...

World of Tanks video details clan fortifications historical battles

World of Tanks will add new ways for players to build and battle this year, and a developer diary released today on the game's official YouTube channel explains what's headed to the game. Developer Wargaming.net will add a historical battle mode with the game's 9.0 update. To give each side a fighting chance, the developer wants to ensure that matches are balanced in a way that real-life battles weren't. "One of the solutions is unequal team numbers," a developer said. "This means that one team may have 15 vehicles while the other may have only three." Additional changes include revamped hit points, maneuverability, speed and view range unique to the tanks in historical battles mode. Another mode will give teams a mixture of heavy vehicles and a larger number of lighter support...

Wargaming CEO on World of Tanks grand finals and eSports aspirations

The Palace of Culture and Science was ablaze last week with a gigantic, animated projection advertising the Wargaming.net League eSports Grand Finals in Warsaw, Poland. Across the street, at Poland’s biggest shopping mall, 14 teams competed over three days to determine who among them were the best World of Tanks players. The Palace, a gift from Joseph Stalin following Poland’s turn to Communism after World War II, was incorporated into the pomp and pageantry around the nation’s capital. It towered over the city of Warsaw, brightly lit in hopes of bringing attention to the nearly 100 eSports athletes in town to compete for the $300,000 prize pool. "My mind is … totally exploded," said Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi. "This is so cool. This is Hollywood. I’m so impressed and fascinated....

Big graphic improvements are coming for the tanks of World of Tanks

World of Tanks is getting a comprehensive update in 2014. Developer Wargaming.net has already outlined its plans for the free-to-play shooter's physics package, and this latest developer diary shows what is in store for the graphics. World of Tanks launched in North America in 2011, at a time when its models had to account for lower-performing PCs. The graphics upgrade will introduce tank models ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 polygons — where tank models had about 8,000 polygons at launch. The dev diary presents a detailed look at how this level of, well, detail is supported. Essentially, artists create an ideal tank model — something far beyond normal capacity — and then in post-production the model will be optimized to a point where current technology is able to process it. See...

The latest update for Wargaming's team-based massively multiplayer online game, World of Tanks, introduces national combat in Europe and Russia, the developer announced today.
