WWE '13 review: attitude adjustment

WWE '13 shines in the Attitude Era, but the in-match action supports it with a strong foundation of wrestling gameplay. Simple striking and grappling controls mean that it's easy to make cool stuff happen, even with only a vague idea of the corresponding button combinations. And although the energy bar is hidden from display by default, WWE '13 does a fine job of conveying damage organically. If you work your opponent's legs, he'll eventually begin moving with a limp; if you beat on his face, his head will droop. Those conditions have a material effect on the match, too: Weakening a body part makes it easier to succeed with a submission hold. it's easy to make cool stuff happen, even with only a vague idea of the corresponding combinations But you have to know which hold to use. Take-Two agrees to assume control of WWE video game license from THQ

Take-Two has reached an agreement with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), bankrupt publisher THQ and Japanese studio Yuke's to take over development of the WWE video game franchise, according to a motion filed in federal bankruptcy court yesterday. The filing confirms a previous rumor. Pending the court's approval of the agreement, Take-Two will publish future WWE video games that will be developed by Yuke's, which made THQ-published WWE titles for more than a decade. "We can confirm that we have entered into an agreement to publish the WWE video game series that is developed by Yukes [sic]. At this time, the agreement is pending court approval and we anticipate that it will be finalized shortly. We are very excited about the potential of this agreement and will have more to share...

WWE video game license reportedly being acquired by Take-Two

The WWE video game license will be acquired by 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive, reports IGN. THQ, the former licensee for WWE games, filed for bankruptcy last month. Its assets, including studios and intellectual property, were sold piecemeal at auction today; pending approval of the sales by a federal bankruptcy court judge, THQ will cease to exist as a company. Since THQ did not own the rights to the WWE brand — the company licensed them from the wrestling organization — or the WWE games' developer, Yuke's Co., the WWE license was not up for bidding, and WWE's contract with THQ will likely die with the publisher. That suggests that Take-Two's new agreement with WWE was negotiated separately from THQ's bankruptcy proceedings and its asset auction. Terms of the...

'WWE '13' DX trailer has two words for you

The Attitude Era mode in WWE '13 would be nothing without the inclusion of the defining force of the period, D-Generation X, and the group is featured in a new trailer and screenshots from the game. The members of DX were the primary purveyors of attitude during their late 1990s and early 2000s heyday. Their heinous shenanigans included marking their territory by spray-painting their bright green logo everywhere, and telling everyone who bothered them to, well, you know. The trailer below starts off with real-life clips of DX's antics before transitioning into in-game footage of Shawn Michaels delivering Sweet Chin Music to Bret Hart and Triple H giving The Pedigree to The Rock. We've also collected four screenshots of DX in the gallery below the video. WWE '13 launches on October...

'WWE '13' gets King of the Ring and I Quit matches

WWE '13 focuses heavily on the Attitude Era, and the game will include two of the period's prominent match types, the "King of the Ring" and "I Quit" contests, publisher THQ announced today. The King of the Ring was a single-elimination tournament around which the WWE (née WWF) held a pay-per-view event. WWE '13 players can set up King of the Ring with a variety of options, including selecting the number of participants (4, 8, or 16) and the types of matches involved, and the mode supports one or two human combatants. The old I Quit match is back in a WWE game for the first time in eight years, according to THQ. It's a one-on-one, no-holds-barred contest with a humiliating end: the rules stipulate that the match can only end when one fighter concedes defeat by saying the words "I...

'WWE '13' trailer invites The Rock into the ring

THQ released a new trailer for WWE '13 this morning, detailing the rise of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the People's Champion and his storyline's availability in the game's Attitude Era mode. Players can participate in some of The Rock's most famous ringside scuffles, including his fights with Ken Shamrock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Relive the wrestling and cinema star's rise to fame, hitting on career points both in and out of the ring – but mostly in the ring – including his time with The Corporation, a division of the World Wrestling Federation popular in the 1990s. WWE '13 is coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii on October 30th. Check out Polygon's full preview on the series' latest installment.

'WWE '13' trailer asks Mike Tyson about his wrestling memories

WWE '13 includes a playable Mike Tyson as part of its Attitude Era focus, and in a new trailer, Tyson himself speaks about his time in the WWF and his inclusion in the game. Tyson drops a few f-bombs as he reminisces about his brief stint in D-Generation X. He also seems legitimately excited to see himself in WWE '13, crotch chop and all. Finally, he exhorts wrestling fans to buy the game so they can pit him against wrestling talents both old and new, like Stone Cold and John Cena. WWE '13 will be out on October 30th, 2012, on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. For more on what's new this year, check out our full preview.

Struggling THQ posts better-than-expected quarter, $15.4 million profit

THQ busted out its rarely used black pen for the most recent quarter, the first of its fiscal 2013, posting $15.4 million in net income on sales of $133.7 million. That's a big swing into the black for the company, which has posted three consecutive losing quarters. During the same quarter last year, THQ posted a net loss of $38.4 million on sales of $195.2 million. THQ's slashed its operating income over the past year, cutting it from $92.7 million during the same quarter last year to just $35.4 million this year. The publisher unloaded its UFC license to Electronic Arts earlier this year, dropped Valhalla Game Studios' Devil's Third, and closed facilities, including THQ San Diego and its Arizona-based QA facility. THQ had no new releases during the first quarter, instead relying on...
