XCOM: Enemy Unknown review: blinded by science

I'm 30 hours into the single-player campaign of XCOM: Enemy Unknown when it strikes me that I've been doing it all wrong from the start. That I decide to keep on going says something about the way I've chosen to play. I have disabled "Ironman Mode" - which would prevent me from saving the game at all - but I have accepted certain outcomes as inevitable. I have a few "chosen" characters I will not allow to die, but the rest ... well, saving Humanity from the alien scourge is a dirty business. The Earth appreciates their sacrifice. So this latest setback, the doing it all wrong, is, to me, simply part of the learning curve. After all, if you're playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown the way it was intended - the way the original demanded - you're going in blind, stumbling toward victory against a...

Treachery is afoot in XCOM: Enemy Within trailer

A new trailer for XCOM: Enemy Within reveals EXALT, a mysterious organization dedicated to undermining the human resistance to alien invasion. EXALT has betrayed humanity and the XCOM organization by compromising its abilities, warns the trailer. Whereas the XCOM forces had previously been ordered to defend all human life at any cost, that directive has been rescinded in favor of a new one: Eliminate the traitors. For more on EXALT and Enemy Within, the stand-alone expansion to last year's XCOM: Enemy Unknown, check out Polygon's preview.

XCOM: Enemy Within turns your agents into undercover spies

It's difficult to describe Enemy Within's new tools and tricks without first introducing the narrative addition: EXALT, an underground paramilitary organization with "misguided sympathies" for the alien invaders, as lead designer Anada Gupta described it to Polygon. EXALT members are intent on acquiring the same alien technology and artifacts that are critical to XCOM's efforts, but want this technology to help them assume what they feel is their rightful place as rulers of the world. The arrival of the alien menace was seen as an opportunity for them to rise up — and since they have already been waiting for years, maybe decades, to make a move, they don't mind if a couple million people have to die to make their dream a reality. Gupta said he takes "special pride" in the EXALT...

XCOM: Enemy Within 'too big' to be console DLC

XCOM: Enemy Unknown's Enemy Within expansion will arrive on consoles as part of the Commander's Edition retail release and not as DLC because the file was too large to "patch in," Garth DeAngelis, senior producer at Firaxis Games told Joystiq at PAX. "For the expansion on the PC, it was fairly straightforward," DeAngelis told Joystiq. "But when it came to the consoles, it was too big. If we wanted to deliver the same content to the console players, we had to do it this way as a standalone expansion on a disc. We couldn't simply just patch it in." Enemy Within will see a release as DLC on Windows PC and Mac for $30. The Commander's Edition features XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the Enemy Within expansion and Slingshot and Elite Soldier add-ons. According to DeAngelis, the company wanted to...

XCOM: Enemy Within's alien threat is literally closer to the heart

"Infestation" may not be the right word, though, unless you count harvesting alien tissue and technology to fuse with your own body. According to Garth DeAngelis, senior producer at Firaxis, one aspect of the "Enemy Within" is the way players will use alien autopsies to create the expansion's two new brands of soldiers: mechs and genetic mutations, called g-mods. These new soldiers, weapons, abilities and enemies were inspired by fan feedback and are a nod to player-created mods, bits and pieces of new stuff that fans have been clamoring for since XCOM: Enemy Unknown launched last October. But another way of looking at what the "Enemy Within" may be could be in the way players treat, or mistreat, these soldiers. You could be your own enemy, sending your characters off to die. The...
