XCOM: Enemy Unknown review: blinded by science

I'm 30 hours into the single-player campaign of XCOM: Enemy Unknown when it strikes me that I've been doing it all wrong from the start. That I decide to keep on going says something about the way I've chosen to play. I have disabled "Ironman Mode" - which would prevent me from saving the game at all - but I have accepted certain outcomes as inevitable. I have a few "chosen" characters I will not allow to die, but the rest ... well, saving Humanity from the alien scourge is a dirty business. The Earth appreciates their sacrifice. So this latest setback, the doing it all wrong, is, to me, simply part of the learning curve. After all, if you're playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown the way it was intended - the way the original demanded - you're going in blind, stumbling toward victory against a...

XCOM: Enemy Unknown available on PSN for $39.99

Firaxis Games' XCOM: Enemy Unknown is available now for PlayStation 3 on the PlayStation Network in North America for $39.99, the official PlayStation blog revealed. A Mac "Elite Edition" of the strategy game will see a release for Mac on April 25, as announced at the Firaxis Games' PAX East panel. Feral Interactive will handle the XCOM: Enemy Unknown Mac port. Last month, 2K Games announced that a full port of XCOM: Enemy Unknown will launch for iOS devices this Summer. In an interview with Polygon, lead developer Jake Solomon said that porting XCOM to iOS felt "natural," and that the "touch interface is sort of uniquely suited to strategy games, especially turn-based strategy games." XCOM: Enemy Unknown was first released on Oct. 9, 2012 for Windows PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360....

Firaxis teases 'what may be coming next' for XCOM at PAX East panel

A brief glimpse of the future of XCOM was shown off during Firaxis' PAX East 2013 panel moments ago, hinting that a new alien threat may be aligning against planet Earth. The teaser, which featured a static-riddled message from the "councilman," delivered an ominous message to close out the panel. "This next one is big," Firaxis' Jake Solomon told the panel's attendees. "You're not going to see it anywhere else, we're not even going to talk about it for a while. This is for those of you who care enough to be super fans and came to this panel. We wanted to give you a sneak peek at what may be coming next, so, we have an incoming transmission from the councilman." The message, which was fairly difficult to translate, was not an optimistic one. "Hello Commander," the councilman said....

Take-Two reports 76 percent jump in Q3 revenue led by NBA 2K13 sales

Take-Two announced strong results today for the third quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, reporting a 76 percent year-over-year increase in net revenue led primarily by 4.5 million units shipped of NBA 2K13. For the quarter ending Dec. 31, 2012, Take-Two tallied net revenue of $415.8 million, a 76 percent jump over the $236.3 million of revenue for the same period in 2011. Net income for the quarter increased by 399 percent to $70.9 million from $14.2 million. Firaxis threw out first 'awful' XCOM prototype in 2003

Firaxis worked on an earlier XCOM remake than 2012's XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but the prototype was thrown out for being downright "awful," according to lead designer Jake Solomon. Speaking with Edge, Solomon explained that the studio first attempted a reboot in 2003, but never succeeded. "It's a good thing it never went ahead, because I was way too young, I had very little experience, and I just wasn't in the right place to make that game," Solomon said. "It really took a long time until it made sense for the team and for the company." Plans for XCOM picked up again in 2008, when the team sought to create an upgrade of the original game. The project eventually evolved into 2012's reboot, XCOM: Enemy Unknown. XCOM: Enemy Unknown was released on Oct. 9, 2012, for Windows, Xbox 360 and...

XCOM: Enemy Unknown developers working on 'really awesome' DLC

XCOM: Enemy Unknown publisher 2K Games originally announced two pieces of downloadable content for the strategy game, both of which have now been released, but developer Firaxis Games told Polygon last week that the studio isn't done making XCOM content. The first piece of DLC, the $6.99 Slingshot Content Pack, brought a brief storyline with three new maps into Enemy Unknown's campaign when it launched in early December. Firaxis released the game's Second Wave DLC, which added 16 gameplay tweaks to let players customize their experience, for free yesterday as part of a title update. According to lead designer Jake Solomon, Slingshot and Second Wave aren't the only add-ons Firaxis has planned for XCOM. "We do have more content coming in 2013," he said. "We're working on something...
