Valve releases Source Filmmaker animation tool for free

Valve's Source Filmmaker now in open beta.

After a brief closed beta, Valve is now letting anyone and everyone with a Windows PC and a Steam account play with its in-house movie making tool, Source Filmmaker, for free.

Source Filmmaker is the same software Valve uses to animate the pre-rendered cinematics for Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead and Dota 2. The game maker announced it would release the animation tool last month alongside the debut of the final "Meet the Team" short for Team Fortress 2, "Meet the Pyro."

Valve has also released a new Source Filmmaker animation session, "Meet the Engineer," for burgeoning animators to learn from and remix. A new Steam Community page has been set up for Source Filmmaker videos to be watched, rated and discussed.
