Retro/Grade, the rhythm-based shoot-'em-up that can be played with a PlayStation 3 gamepad or guitar controller, is set for release exclusively on the PlayStation Network on August 21st, developer 24 Caret Games announced today.

Its electronic soundtrack will be sold separately on the PlayStation Store, and a discounted bundle with the game and soundtrack will also be available; Sony has not yet revealed pricing information. Retro/Grade previously won the Audience Award at IndieCade 2010.

Retro/Grade will also kick off Sony's "PlayStation Plus Presents" program, which offers select indie games free to PlayStation Plus subscribers for eight weeks after their launch.

In Retro/Grade, you "un-destroy the universe," playing in reverse to restore the proper flow of time after an alien invasion damages the space-time continuum. You "unfire" your shots, which sync up with the beat of the music, and dodge enemy fire that is also returning to its guns. In addition, a power-up lets you undo any mistakes you made (like colliding with an enemy) by reversing the game's flow of time so that it moves forward at twice the normal speed.

If you found that description as confusing as we did, maybe watching the trailer below will help to explain further. We hope you still have a PS3 guitar controller lying around somewhere, since that looks like the ideal way to play Retro/Grade. For more details, head to the game's official website.
