FIFA 13 on Wii U, a launch title for the console, integrates the console's GamePad to keep players engaged while playing, EA announced today at its Summer Showcase.

The iOS version of the game will feature online multiplayer for the first time, and also will allow players to use quick swipes to change their team's play style.

FIFA 13 line producer Nick Channon explained at the Summer Showcase that because developer EA Canada expects the Wii U to have "a much more casual demographic," the studio is implementing features to make the Wii U version of the game more accessible. During a single-player match, the GamePad provides "additional functionality" to put "much more precision in the hands of the user."

The GamePad functionality resembles the touchscreen features seen in FIFA Soccer on Vita. Wii U players can tap their teammates on the GamePad screen to pass the ball to them. And once they're within range of the goal, pressing the left stick or shaking the GamePad brings up a net on the screen; tapping in a particular spot will shoot the ball there. In addition, players can hold up the GamePad and tilt it to look around the game world before taking a free kick.

On Wii U, the GamePad also allows players to keep track of statistics and make on-the-fly adjustments, while the game is running. The right side of the GamePad holds a variety of tabs. One displays player and team stats that update in real time; others let players make substitutions or change strategies. On PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, players have to pause the game to access this information; on Wii U, it's available at players' fingertips.

Co-op play also integrates the GamePad and makes FIFA 13 more accessible. While one player directly controls the players on the pitch, a second player — who might be less skilled — can pick up the GamePad and help out his or her partner, tapping on the screen to send teammates on runs that could lead to great scoring chances.

FIFA 13 will be available on Wii U and iOS this fall.
