'Medal of Honor: Warfighter' takes a page from 'Counter-Strike' with new Home Run multiplayer mode

Medal of Honor Warfighter leaves you dead in the water with new Home Run multiplayer mode.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is taking a page out of the Counter-Strike playbook for multiplayer by offering a new mode, Home Run, in which players can only die once per round and will not respawn.

The concept is based on what is in essence an attack-and-defend match of capture the flag, where second chances aren't granted to downed players. A six-man strong defending team is given two flags to protect against six attackers in 10 fast-paced rounds. To win the attacking team only needs to capture one of the two flags and deliver it to their base.

The result is a frenzied match, with the developers aiming to create a tight environment that would concentrate the action in a way similar to that seen in certain previous Call of Duty maps. Warfighter's is small and asymmetrical. Camping is discouraged by the cramped design. But it is geared toward e-Sports, emphasizing frenetic competition, classes, and short rounds. After five rounds the attackers become the defenders to make up the full ten, bringing playstyle variation to the mode.

Each round is roughly one or two minutes long - a near arcade shooter combined with the visual realism gained from the Frostbite 2 engine. Players can choose from six classes that each have their purposes on the map. The assault is a run and gun class. The point man is gifted with speed and surprise abilities, including access to a UAV. The heavy gunner will cover other players and offer suppression. Spec Ops has a view ability that temporarily allows him to see enemies through walls. In addition, the player can choose the sniper or demolition expert class.

Teams are made up of Tier 1 special forces operatives designed around 10 different countries, and allowing users to experience what is being called by its developer "multi-national multiplayer" which ranges from Canadians to Norwegians. So while familiar, the game has its own spin on the multiplayer concepts it uses.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter is scheduled to release October 23rd in North America on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
