PAX Prime 2012: All the games and news, live from Seattle

This weekend PAX Prime takes over Seattle, delivering a massive three day event of video game booths, concerts and panels all packed into the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. The show officially runs from August 31st to September 2nd, but we arrived a bit early to make sure we didn't miss a thing. We'll be here the rest of the week and over the weekend making sure you don't miss anything either.

'The Walking Dead' Episode 4 coming in October, full PAX panel now available online

"Around Every Corner," the fourth episode of Telltale Games' acclaimed first season of The Walking Dead adventure games, is coming out in October, and the studio just put up the game's PAX Prime panel online.

A.J. LoCascio, voice actor for Marty McFly in Telltale's episodic Back to the Future games, hosted the over-capacity panel, "Playing Dead Live," on the evening of August 31st at the convention. He was joined by The Walking Dead project leads Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin, Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner, and series story consultant and Episode 4 writer Gary Whitta. They discussed the...

'Medal of Honor: Warfighter' blazes its own path in the military shooter genre

Medal of Honor: Warfighter aims to prove that the first-person shooter genre has more to offer.

Based on a demo that we played during PAX Prime last month, Developer Danger Close is positioning Warfighter to riff on the genre's formula and distinguish itself from its competitors. Surface level mechanics aside, it's a unique experience. To begin with, there is no Rambo in Warfighter, no lone wolf against all odds. It's about teamwork, paired as deliberate twosomes both in the campaign and multiplayer modes.

There is no Rambo in 'Warfighter'

It's Danger Close's attempt to ground the...

Mobage deals 'Transformers,' 'Marvel' and wildcard 'Hellfire' at PAX Prime

Polygon visited Mobage's booth at PAX prime last week to check out three free-to-play games: Transformers: Legends, Marvel: War of Heroes, and Hellfire.

Transformers and Marvel are both card-based battle games, in which players collect, combine, and battle with in-game cards. Each card represents a character and includes skills and attributes that players can buff with other cards they collect while playing the game.

In Transformers: Legends, players will have choose between the Autobots, who want to protect Earth, and Decepticons, who'd rather strip-mine it for its energon. During the...

Behind the scenes of PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth with its organizer

PAX's Indie Megabooth is the product of cooperation.

At PAX Prime last week, a group of independent developers pooled their resources to purchase acreage on the show's main floor and subdivided it into mini-booths, where the developers were on hand with over 30 games.

The Megabooth is the brainchild of Fire Hose Games' Eitan Glinert, who wanted a booth in the busier, more expensive main convention hall. After PAX Prime 2011, he contacted indie developers with the idea of splitting the cost and space of a booth there.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, so Glinert enlisted the help of...

'Guacamelee' shows how PS3 + Vita can equal Wii U

Guacamelee, the luchador-inspired brawler heading to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita next year, was playable at PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth last week. Polygon spoke with the developers at DrinkBox Studios about the game and the cross-play features that offer an experience similar to the Wii U by allowing the game to be played simultaneously on both systems.

As the developers played through a level that takes place about an hour into the campaign, they highlighted the game's cross-control feature, a dual screen option like the Wii U's GamePad. While using the Vita as a controller, a...

'State of Decay' is about surviving, managing the zombie apocalypse

The end of the world is just the beginning for Undead Labs, the creators of in-development zombie survival game State of Decay. The company's upcoming open-world survival adventure, coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PC, hopefully early next year, is the first step in what Undead Labs hopes to do with the zombie video game genre.

Undead Labs brought State of Decay to PAX Prime this past weekend, showcasing an early alpha build of the game that blends zombie slaying with base building, morale management, scavenging, and open-world action. In the brief playable demo, players must content with a...

'The Last of Us' PAX Prime 2012 demo takes Joel and Ellie through Pittsburgh

The Last of Us was demoed in a dirty bathroom at PAX Prime this past weekend, and Naughty Dog put the entire clip — nearly 16 minutes of in-game footage — online today.

It's an extended cut of the same demo we saw at E3, a sequence in Pittsburgh in which protagonists Joel and Ellie make their way through a dilapidated hotel. The demo shows off the banter between the two characters as they solve environmental puzzles and sneak around the vagrants who have set up shop in the building.

We've embedded the longer PAX Prime demo first, and the seven-and-a-half-minute E3 demo below it. Watch both...

How Monolith aims to bring a MOBA to consoles with 'Guardians of Middle-earth'

Console gamers can be forgiven for furrowing their collective brows at the acronym MOBA, which stands for multiplayer online battle arena. Like the real-time strategy (RTS) genre, it exists almost solely within the domain of PC gaming.

Monolith Productions wants to change that, and their upcoming console-exclusive MOBA, The Lord of the Rings: Guardians of Middle-earth is their volley into the battlefield. The company's goal is to embrace the depth, strategy, and timing inherent in PC MOBAs, while making it accessible to console gamers.

Polygon visited Monolith's studios in Kirkland,...

'Assassin's Creed 3' meets parkour in new video

At PAX Prime last week, Ubisoft's Steven Masters and Phillippe Bergeron appeared in a panel to discuss creating the impending Assassin's Creed 3 and answer fan questions.

Before the duo entered, the panel's moderator took to the stage and announced that they'd brought something for the fans: The world premier of a video to be released online next week.

Inspired by the Assassin's Creed franchise, the video is set to an original composition called "Assassin" by Stephen Anderson and follows parkour specialist Ronnie Shalvis as he catapults through a city dressed in Assassin garb.

Tomb Raider PAX demo shows Lara Croft platforming and hunting

A 13-minute Tomb Raider gameplay demo from PAX was released this week showing footage of a young Lara Croft trying to find other survivors on an island she is stranded on.

The video, filmed by GamesRadar, includes commentary from the senior product manager from Square Enix, Mark Turosz, and shows Lara Croft finding a bow and arrow and learning to hunt deer.

Turosz explains that players can approach hunting in different ways – they can take the stealth approach by sneaking up on the animals or they can run straight at them.

Tomb Raider will be out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on...

'Aliens: Colonial Marines' will feature playable female space marines

The developer of Aliens: Colonial Marines announced at PAX this weekend that, despite previous confirmation to the contrary, the sci-fi shooter will feature playable female space marines.

During an E3 livestream, when Gearbox producer Brian Burleson was asked whether Aliens: Colonial Marines would feature female colonial marines, he responded "No, sadly not." He added "There's lots of girls in the game, it's not just all guys." Given the Alien series' strong female protagonists, like Ellen Ripley and Private Vasquez, an all-male playable cast seemed like an unusual oversight by the...

'Chasing Aurora' brings indie game style to Wii U eShop

PAX Prime's Indie Megabooth was stuffed with games for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, but we only saw on Wii U GamePad amongst the group of independent developers. It belonged to the creators of Chasing Aurora, an asymmetric multiplayer game coming to Nintendo's eShop.

The demo version of Chasing Aurora pits one Wii U GamePad player against four others armed with Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers, with one player in pursuit of the other four.

With its sharply angular characters and 2D, pop-up book style, Chasing Aurora doesn't really look like anything else on the Wii U. The...

Because if you've ever outfitted a paper doll avatar in a role-playing game like Diablo or Baldur's Gate, you already know how to build a deck in Card Hunter.

'Injustice: Gods Among Us' vs. PAX Prime 2012

NetherRealm Studios has been making Mortal Kombat games for over 20 years, but its next game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, leaves Earthrealm behind for the DC Comics universe.

Polygon caught up with Hector Sanchez, a producer at NetherRealm, at PAX Prime, and he told us that Injustice offered a chance to reassess how the studio makes fighting games. Players familiar with Mortal Kombat will feel the difference as soon as they pick up a controller. Injustice departs from the Mortal Kombat control scheme. Gone, for example, is the block button in favor of blocking by pressing back.

'Halo 4' behind-the-scenes video discusses Master Chief and Cortana's humanity

In Halo 4's newest video from the development process, "A Hero Awakens," the developers at 343 Industries discuss the ways in which they humanize faceless series protagonist Master Chief.

The video premiered during the Halo 4 panel at PAX Prime 2012.

343i used performance capture in Halo 4's cutscenes, although the voice actors for Master Chief and Cortana differ from the performance-capture actors. The video features plenty of behind-the-scenes footage from the process. Of the story, narrative director Armando Troisi said, "Until it actually touches an actor, it lacks humanity."

"It’s a melee-style brawler game at 190 miles per hour," Twisted Pixel’s studio director Michael Wilford told Polygon.

Rise of the Triad embraces absurdity at PAX Prime 2012

Calling Rise of the Triad fast is like calling the hinged iron webbing over a pit of spikes troublesome. It's true as far as it goes, but neither quite gets the point across.

There was a guy in a flannel shirt and backpack playing the reboot of the over-the-top 90s-era first-person shooter on the floor at PAX when I walked up to the RotT PC. As I watched over his shoulder, I assumed that there was a speed-based mod running that had been tuned to light speed.

I stand behind the guy with flannel shirt, watching him spar with weapons familiar to RotT fans and giggle-inducing new ones....

Online and Facebook game developers face new challenges

Free online and Facebook game developers are encountering more and more challenges when it comes to monetizing their games, according to a recent panel at PAX. Several PopCap team members spoke on the topic of bringing a game from concept to creation.

By Ed Allard of PopCap's account, the horizon is different than it looked a few years ago. Ever-growing teams continue to exhaust themselves until the date of release, but a game launch doesn't mean the same thing as it used to.

"All of those rules have changed now."

"You'd ship a game, and shipping the game was the finish line," said Allard,...

Pitchford says the date is all-but confirmed — "There may be a little fudge factor there," he warned — as the downloadable content is still being developed by the Borderlands 2 team. The Mechromancer, a pet-style class who can summon the robot weapon known as Deathtrap, will cost $9.99 or 800 Microsoft Points when she's released in October. 'Halo 4' to feature Grifball as multiplayer mode

Halo 4 will include Grifball, a frantic multiplayer sport that Texas studio Rooster Teeth created for Halo 3, as one of its main multiplayer modes, 343 Industries confirmed at PAX Prime yesterday.

The Grifball multiplayer mod was created in late 2007 for Halo 3 and was inspired by a joke from the webseries Red vs. Blue. It involves opposing teams trying to get the grifball into the opponent's goal – using a hammer will send the grifball flying, using the sword will kill the grifball carrier and transfer it to another player. Scoring a goal detonates the grifball and kills the player who was...

"Hello, PAX," he said through a translator, and the ovation grew taller and louder.

Creating a scene without the cutscene: the balance of narration and gameplay

When writing video games, there's a challenge in keeping the narrative in line with the gameplay. Writers have to guess what players will—or in many cases, won't—do. Games are by design full of boundaries, but if your write your story well enough, no one will ever know.

At a PAX panel, Portal writer Erik Wolpaw and Double Fine president Tim Schafer discussed the idea of "plot vs. play." It gets tricky. You could go the Metal Gear Solid route, à la film-worthy cutscenes, or use a tongue-in-cheek interactive method, like Portal. Wolpaw called it an uneasy balance, joking that sometimes adding...

How Insomniac made a real game on Facebook with Outernauts

Insomniac Games is a studio known for console games. But about two and a half years ago, Brian Hastings, Insomniac's chief creative officer, who had, among other things, dreamed up the Ratchet & Clank games, realized that there was opportunity to bring a "real game" to Facebook.

'Borderlands 2' dares you to beat the ultra-hard Terramorphous the Invincible

Four team members from Gearbox Software went up against Borderlands 2's toughest boss monster in a demo at PAX today. With four max level characters and an armory of high-level guns — and after cashing in a few "Bad-Ass Rank" tokens to further boost their skills — the players sounded the horn that summoned Terramorphous the Invincible.

Working in tandem, they spent a good five minutes firing bullets, launching rockets, and firing sentry guns at Terramorphous. The developers did about 5% damage to him before dying a variety of gruesome deaths. It wasn't even close.

"One of my favorite games was Call of Duty 2, when there was the ability to go in and change from the very beginning — no ranking, no bullshit," he said. "You know, you don't run around the map and get shot — right as you're about to shoot someone else — by a helicopter. You don't get bit by a dog. It's you, and your weapon, against everybody else."

Those forced to shift to Steam will be rewarded with special content that only they will ever have access to, Nate Edson, senior producer on Gotham City Impostors, tells Polygon.

The shift is in part spurred by the fact that the game is a rework of the...

Insomniac Games announces 'Fuse,' an 'all-new intellectual property'

Insomniac Games founder Ted Price announced at his PAX Prime keynote today that his company was working on an "all-new intellectual property" named Fuse.

Price showed a screenshot from the game — which looked similar to Insomniac's already announced shooter Overstrike, which may explain the fate of that game — and a link to Fusegame.com. The site currently features a countdown clock that expires sometime in September.

Insomniac Games first revealed Overstrike in 2011 with a pre-rendered trailer at an Electronic Arts press conference. The game hasn't been shown publicly since.

The series of cartoon shorts, which writer Chris Plante is calling "The Best Trailer Ever... This Week," is the latest promotion for the time-bending, death-multiplying shooter from developer Capybara Games. Meet 'The Unfinished Swan's' slightly crazy King and very stark levels

Before talking about the shifting play styles of The Unfinished Swan at Gamescom, developer Giant Sparrow showed us this poignant little video.

While the point is to highlight some of those new ways of playing, like by watering a vine to use it as a organic ladder throughout one level, the look of these new levels and the sad little backstory take a front seat in the trailer released today.

No date has been set for The Unfinished Swan which is coming to the PS3's Playstation Network exclusively.
