AbleGamers Foundation releases guidebook on developing for disabled gamers
Includificaton, a 48-page manual for video game developers and publishers describing how to design for gamers with specific disabilities, was announced today by its creator the AbleGamers Foundation.
Includificaton, a manual for video game developers and publishers describing how to design for gamers with specific disabilities, was unveiled today by the AbleGamers Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to evaluating the accessibility of mainstream video games.
Includification explores gaming solutions for disabled players and outlines the steps developers can take to complete them. The publication also features letters from industry figures to the community at large addressing the need for these resolutions.
"Make it a priority to include accessibility, and you'll find yourself an audience that truly appreciates the extra effort," reads the main page of the project's official website. "In the world of disability, small changes can make a big difference."
The project lists detailed solutions for gamers with hearing and cognitive disabilities as well as physical defects that affect mobility and vision impairment.
"For nearly a decade, our organization has been reaching out to developers convincing them they need to include accessibility for gamers with disabilities," said president Mark Barlet in a press release.
"It is my sincerest wish that a copy of this document sits on the desk of every developer, in the resource area of every library and with every major publisher across the world," he added. "It's time game accessibility leaped to the next level and these guidelines show developers exactly how to enable gamers with disabilities in the easiest, most efficient and cost-effective manner possible."
The manual is available as a free PDF, or physical copies can be purchased from Amazon for $7.02.
