Hawken may not offer Oculus Rift support at launch – instead, it will come as a downloadable patch after the game's release, according to Hawken's developer, Meteor Entertainment.
Speaking in an interview with GameSpy, Meteor Entertainment's Chief Production Officer, Bill Wagner, said that the development team is very excited to implement the virtual reality Oculus Rift headset with their multiplayer mech combat game, Hawken, but having the game launch with Oculus Rift support may be a bit ambitious.
"We're really excited about it but we want to get the hardware first," Wagner said. "We've got designs and plans on how we would do it, like enabling people to look around inside the cockpit while still being able to move forward and control the mech. But it's super early to be talking about it now."
Wagner said that right now the studio is focusing on launching the game on December 12th. Any support for the Oculus Rift headset would come after the team receives the hardware and can determine the best way to implement it into their game. The support would be delivered via a post-launch game patch.
The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset was pitched on Kickstarter and raised $2,437,430 of a $250,000 goal. The Kickstarter campaign listed both Hawken and Doom 3 as Oculus-ready games, with an update posted on August 27th saying that Hawken would launch Oculus-ready on December 12th, 2012.
The developers of Hawken have not confirmed a date for when Oculus support will be enabled.
