You should play Hideo Kojima's game of the year

Play This Now is an ongoing feature in which we highlight free or cheap games that you should play. Now. Framed, an indie puzzle game where you rearrange comic panels in order to successfully guide the protagonist through the story, is Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima's game of the year. Last night, I finally got my hands on the game and found out why. Played "FRAMED" by Liveshack. High sense of gameplay, graphic, & sound. My best game in this year without any doubt. pic.twitter.com/OFy9c9KTHU" — HIDEO_KOJIMA (@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) November 22, 2014 Instead of directly controlling the silhouetted protagonist, you swipe to rearrange panels in a comic strip, ideally avoiding enemies, pits and other obstacles. Once you feel you've got the right order, you hit play and...

Apple mistakenly censored Papers, Please on iOS, nudity is being patched back in

The iPad release of Papers, Please will have nudity after all — Apple rejected the original unedited version due to a "misunderstanding," said developer Lucas Pope on Twitter today. Papers, Please puts players in the shoes of a border patrol agent for the fictional, vaguely Eastern European country of Arstotzka. The original PC release of Papers, Please — a game with a deliberately low-resolution pixelated art style — contains nudity in situations where people looking to cross into Arstotzka are put through body scanning machines (see screenshot above). Players can toggle nakedness on or off in the game's settings. Pope launched Papers, Please on iPad today. In announcing the release date for the iPad version earlier this week, he said that he had to remove nudity from the game in...

Earlier this week, the Infinity Blade franchise celebrated its fourth anniversary, and the developers at Chair Entertainment created a video that explores the art behind a series that blurs the line between mobile and console graphics. Press play above to watch the featurette, which Chair shared exclusively with Polygon today. You'll learn how Infinity Blade's fantasy world evolved artistically and what the developers did to keep each game new and each enemy interesting. You can also browse the gallery below for a closer look at some of the concept art that appears in The Art of Infinity Blade. "We've got such amazing fans who continue to play and support Infinity Blade and we're really excited to provide them with an inside look at our process and inspiration behind the art they...

After Apple censorship, award-winning Papers, Please finally headed to iPad

Developer Lucas Pope went to Twitter to announce that his award-winning indie game Papers, Please will be available Dec. 12 on iPad. The title will be available in the App Store for $7.99, with a discount to $5.99 at launch. Papers, Please tells the story of a border guard along the edge of a fake country called Arstotzka. Throughout the course of the game players must make decisions about who they allow to cross the border, a mundane task that eventually leads to an emotional story. The game won numerous awards including the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the 2014 Independent Games Festival Awards and Best Simulation Game at the 2014 BAFTA Video Games Awards. In order to pass Apple certification the game did require a change in that full nudity was removed from the game after it was...

Let's get silly with Hearthstone's new Mech cards!

The biggest addition to Hearthstone's huge Goblins vs. Gnomes expansion is the addition of a new card category: Mechs. Most of the new minions in the expansion — and a bunch of classic minions that have been grandfathered in — fall under the new category that, like Murlocs, Demons and Beasts before it, have some really interesting interplay between them. Toss in new mechanics like Spare Parts, which bestow basic buffs and debuffs for not much mana, and the metagame of Hearthstone's turned on its ear. Watch as Phil and I wade back into the Hearthstone breach to try and make sense of these new cards. In the video above, we crack open a few more packs, tune up a Priest Mech deck and wage war against the internet — and each other.

What I learned making, and spending, a fortune in Hearthstone

I have 125 "free" packs of Goblins vs. Gnomes Hearthstone cards. There wasn’t any weird trick to doing this. I’ve just been playing the game regularly for nearly a year. Hearthstone gives you a daily quest that rewards in-game currency, or gold, for accomplishing tasks like winning games with different classes, dealing damage to enemies or killing minions. You can also reroll a quest to try to get one that awards more gold, or one that requires a class you’d rather play, but you can only do so once a day. You can save up to three quests at a time and, if the objectives overlap — if you have a quest to cast 40 spells and a quest to win two games as a mage — you can complete both objectives simultaneously. I amassed over 12,500 gold between April and December You can use this gold to...

Watch live-action heartbreak as Hearthstone streamers buy the wrong cards

Blizzard released the first expansion for its digital card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft this week, and some streamers were so excited to dive into Goblins vs. Gnomes that they dropped a bunch of cash and gold ... on the completely wrong cards. A few hasty purchases have resulted in some players dropping $70 or more on dozens of Hearthstone cards they don't really want. They just assume they're buying Goblins vs. Gnomes decks. While that sucks for them, we at least benefit from the hilarious, heart-wrenching videos of them being hit with a crashing wave of buyer's remorse. In the video above, Tim from YouTube channel AllGamesPlayed shows how he mistakenly spent a big chunk of gold he'd been saving up, then quickly realizes what he's done. Tim, at least, says he managed to get a...

Hearthstone: Goblins vs. Gnomes expansion is live; watch us play it!

Griffin and I already got a taste of the new Hearthstone expansion last week with our arena video. Now the expansion is out properly, and we're back to document our time with it. In the video above, you can watch us open a stupidly large number of Goblins vs. Gnomes card packs. How many new murloc cards will we find? Will we get any legendaries? And what horrible excuse for a deck will come out of it all? Watch it for yourself and check back later this week for more Hearthstone: Goblins vs. Gnomes coverage.

This UK politician is in trouble for playing Candy Crush Saga during boring meeting

U.K. politician Nigel Mills has issued a public apology after being caught playing mobile puzzle game Candy Crush Saga during a Work and Pensions committee hearing. Pictures of the MP playing the game on his tablet were published by The Sun newspaper over the weekend. Mills initially admitted to the paper of playing the game, telling reporters that he "probably had a game of two" and he would "try to not do it again." Later, Mills said he apologizes "unreservedly" for his behavior during the two-and-a-half hour meeting. "I apologise unreservedly for my behaviour at the committee meeting and realise it fell short of what is expected of a member of parliament," said Mills of his gaming during a meeting that took evidence from representatives of the pensions and insurance industries. "I...

The Goblins vs. Gnomes expansion for Hearthstone won't be out properly until next week, but Blizzard has surprised everyone by making the expansion's cards available early...in Arena mode. While the official release for Goblins vs. Gnomes, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft's first expansion pack, is still next week, players worldwide can hop into the game's Arena right now to take them for a test run. All of the expansion pack cards are available to choose from in the Arena, according to a Blizzard press release. The game's spectator mode should also now be live. "In addition, anyone who logs in to the game between December 4 and December 8 automatically gets their next new Arena run for free," according to Blizzard. "It's a zero-risk chance to see some of the new cards in action-with a high-risk chance of something going explosively awry. These new Hearthstone cards are going to leave me screaming in frustration

In addition to announcing Hearthstone balance updates earlier today, Blizzard just dumped a ton of new cards from the upcoming Goblins vs. Gnomes expansion on the Hearthstone Facebook page. Rather than spend hours breaking down every single one of these new cards, I decided to highlight a handful that I found particularly hilarious and painful-sounding. Crush My first thought when I looked at this card was to discount it, because so few cards with a mana cost of seven or more are worth it. But for a mere three mana, especially for something so easily in the warrior's control, this is sure to cause some annoyance when it kills one of my best minions. Fel Reaver On the one hand, this cards text makes it devastating to most decks and highly...

Hearthstone's first ever expansion pack, Goblins vs. Gnomes, will be arriving next week, Blizzard announced in a press release today. The expansion will be available across all of Hearthstone's platforms (Windows, Mac, and iPad) in America starting on Monday, Dec. 8. It will expand to Europe, Korea, Taiwan and China the following day, Dec. 9. First revealed last month during BlizzCon, Goblins vs. Gnomes will add 120 new cards to the digital card game. Blizzard says the new cards can be purchased in packs, crafted individually or won through arena runs, just like current cards. Upcoming Hearthstone changes slow down hunters, warlocks and rogues

Goblins vs. Gnomes, the first expansion for Blizzard's digital card game Hearthstone, is set to come out some time this month. That's not the only big change coming to the game, Blizzard revealed today. In a blog post on the official Hearthstone forums, Blizzard revealed major changes coming to three individual cards in an upcoming Hearthstone patch. The changes are: The Warlock spell card Soulfire now costs one mana versus the previous zero mana. The neutral Gadgetzan Auctioneer minion card has moved from a five mana cost to six mana. The Hunter spell Flare has increased from a one mana cost to two mana. You may notice a trend here: cheap, highly-used, incredibly powerful cards getting a simple one-mana increase. One mana may not seem like much, and in some cases it won't...

Apple invents technology to account for your butterfingers

Smartphones with gigantic glass screens are the most fragile handheld gaming platform, but a new Apple patent is designed to combat our human butterfingers and help a device move on its own when dropped to minimize damage. The technology would "selectively alter a center of mass of the electronic device," according to U.S. patent 8,903,519 granted today. The patent describes a scenario where, in the space between your hands and the cold, hard ground, your device uses its motion sensor, activates its vibration mechanism and moves on its own to minimize potential damage. The patent even describes a method by which a device would "activate an air foil to change the aerodynamics of the mobile electronic device" to reduce velocity and produce lift. Regardless of how it’s done, it’s all in...

Game of Thrones: 'Iron from Ice' review: for the trees

A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series that spawned the Game of Thrones television show, is a story of a few powerful men and women fighting for control in a world where human life is just another currency. Telltale Games' latest episodic adventure is set in the world of Game of Thrones, and the first episode, "Iron from Ice," attempts to show the player just how desperate life can be for individuals who don't stand at the top of the most powerful houses. It all boils down to the land you control, and the swords you command. Power, or at least the appearance of power, is everything. It's a wonderful setting for an adventure game, but "Iron from Ice" spends a significant amount of time on conversations about very important things that are about to happen — and all that table-setting...
