HE'S ON FIRE.
Uh, what? “Only play single player offline?”
How about those of us who don’t care about motion gaming? Like, at all. Whatsoever.
Those gunz look schweet.
Yeah, this too.
Or you can ignore the rest of that paragraph I guess, and skip to literally the least important part of my argument: the point that somebody within the industry handle something like this and it be tackled from a different angle.
Man, I really wish she would stop making these. She’s an outsider with an agenda. Her feminist views are this: she’s a sex-negative feminist, which essentially means that she doesn’t believe that has ever been, or ever will be a genuinely powerful female protagonist. Her views are that every female in a videogame, or piece of media, ever ,is always to be a trophy to a man or a damsel in distress of some sort.
I would take her arguments more seriously if she decided to examine a few games and see what kinds of stories they’re trying to tell, and if a trope or theme impedes that story, and why; maybe something we can’t really see just by first glance. Instead she cherry picks a bunch of tropes to suit her already established beliefs, picks out a bunch of games and distorts their purpose to suit her already brazen assumptions and hits all of the low-hanging fruit in the process. And this is what we call legitimate criticism? Why don’t we get somebody who’s research paper is more than just a Joss Whedon circle jerk with absolutely no content whatsoever. Don’t even get me started on her TEDtalk. That’s just embarrassing.
Do I want legitimate criticism in videogames? Yes, I do, but I want somebody from within the industry or somebody who has grown up with these things all their life. I’m not going to trust somebody who decided to spread her radical and grossly exaggerated opinions on the internet and ended up with a bunch of money to “criticize” an entire industry. I want somebody with that background who’s going to examine games and examine tropes and base their arguments based on what the game is either doing or not doing correctly, and maybe what would’ve helped the game. I want somebody who might actually have an academia background and is actually equipped to tackle this challenge, because Anita is as ill-equipped as they come.
